Interesting read

Have been having a nose around to see what all the fuss was about & came across some interesting stats on another thread - which I now can't find again <doh>

.... wanted to ask DHC if he could do one for the bottom clubs in the Championship re form over say the last 6 matches & post on the Posh forum. If you dont have the time honey, dont worry .... just liked the way it was presented <ok>

Part of the problem is a few people are too stubborn which turns what was a debate into mud slinging and anarchy.

I don't think people being stubborn should be seen as an issue, rather a challenge to make your argument more persuasively.

I agree with both views. Obviously people are entitled to their own opinions and views and the fact we are able to express them on here is what makes this site so good. I have my opinions on things and I try to express them, not very well sometimes, and I'm willing to take others opinions into account. A couple of times I've had flaws in my arguments pointed out to me and I've accepted I'm wrong and moved on, but I've also been on the receiving end of some 'you're talking bollocks' comments with no explanation as to why. I'm not the most vocal of posters on here, but I do like to contribute occasionally if I feel what I want to say is relevant (even if no-one else thinks it is.)

However since the turn of the year I've found myself less inclined to read most threads as debates on here have gone from this

poster a: this is what I think
poster b: I disagree, I think this
poster a: OK, but have you considered this
poster b: no i hadn't, but did you take this into account
poster a: no I missed that

and are now more like this

poster a: I think this
poster b: thats rubbish, this is the right opinion
poster a: not its not mine is
poster b: no, I'm right

It's got to the point where I'm no longer posting freely, but thinking 'will I get any abuse for posting this' and a lot of the time I'm deleting what I've just written and not bothering to post at all. Hopefully this is because we're just not performing on the pitch and people are taking it out on here because it's a good place to have an anonymous vent and when performances improve the atmosphere on here will as well.

I'm not being bullied into not posting, I'm just thinking about what I post a lot more than I have been. I generally don't really add anything to debates or topics, just re-hash what others have said (and if I'm honest repeating myself), so all I'm doing now is thinking will I actually contribute to the thread or just be another direction for some of the abuse. If it's the latter, and if I'm honest it usually is, I'm just keeping quiet.

I don't think people being stubborn should be seen as an issue, rather a challenge to make your argument more persuasively. There'd be little point in a debate if you made a point, someone disagrees, and then you're expected to turn around and say "of course you're correct, sorry". Most people think logically to arrive at their opinion, so if you disagree you should be pointing out flaws in their logic and making them question their reasoning. Now I'm not saying it can't be frustrating, and using my Yarco example from above it can be exasperating when you can't come up with another way to explain your view, but there should never be a case for insults, in my mind that's a sign you've lost the debate. Besides, we're all friends here simply discussing the finer points of our beloved football club.

Agree, but a few posters have been stubborn to an extent.

Oh and DH, I owe you an apology (not that I was being stubborn before anyone has a stab)! Your maths may be more accurate than mine! Looked at a table from last season after 29 points, the teams in the bottom three were in a similar position to the team currently in the bottom three this season and they all ended up around 37 points and above.

Wow.

I’ll be honest, I’ve not really kept up to date with what’s been going down on this board for a few weeks but has it really come to this? And blimey – I really am hated by some on here aren’t I!!! My parents will be so proud... no seriously, they will – they are both Binners <laugh>

By the way, if people are wondering if it was me who complained then I can assure you it was not. And if anyone is pondering why I’ve been ‘conspicuous by my absence’ as it's been put (I’m sure you’re not really but...) feel free to DM me – I certainly won’t be posting about it on here, though, if I came out and told you all then **** me, would this pathetic and needless squabble be put into perspective.

We all support the same team here, at least, that’s what I thought. I may have fallen out with the likes of KIO, Munky, ILD and Carrabuh more times than you’ve all had hot dinners but I can promsie you, if one of their names crops up in that little sidebar, I’d make sure I read that post as its normally a great read. It’s often much more interesting to disagree than agree – I don’t think that aspect should be denied to anyone (assuming its fairly harmless of course and that both sides realise the nature of the postings).

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say on the matter. Enjoy the rest of the week and lets hope for a better performance on Sunday. We’re almost safe and with the added prospect of our largest ever transfer kitty this summer and a stable, debt-free club, we should all be excited about what the future holds rather than moaning and fighting about stuff. The football may have been far from perfect the past few weeks and certainly not everyones cup of tea, but we are in the fortunate position to be able to change all that.

The future is far brighter than many on here would have you believe and even if we go down this season, or the next, or the one after that, there’s more to life than 90 minutes of football each week.

OTBC

WHY do you think any of the 4 you've mentioned actually care or were wondering where you've been? On my first post back after a while away you replied with at least 3 insulting arrogant remarks.

There's lies, damn lies and statistics. No need for an apology. I think perhaps taking form into account is more accurate than assuming an average rate will continue until the end, especially as teams get desperate, but it's incredibly hard to predict. In past seasons 40 points has been the mantra, and I still think that should be our aim to be on the safe side of things.

As one of the resident grumpies on here I have to say that I have never been offended by anything anybody has said to me in reply even though in many discussions I have often found myself in a minority of one. Perhaps I am too old, stupid or thick skinned. The most important thing is that we all feel passionate about our Club and, unlike many Clubs, brought many people to not606 from the old 606. There is nothing wrong with a good old heated discussion - it gets a lot more heated at my local pub ( unless we are looking out of the window for the shapely lovely to go past ) then it does on here but we all still end up friends. Surely it is better to have a board like that than Reading's. They have just sacked their Manager so I went on their board to see the reaction - nothing!! I have not really noticed anything personal on here but Dave is not one to over react so something must have happened - my suggestion - take note and move on. If anything was getting personal then it does need nipping in the bud before it gets like Mikey - Fact!! Whatever happened to that little twat.
Every discussion of late has got round to our current style of play and that is bound to happen because it is such a big issue. There is always going to be a split between the ' half full ' brigade who see it as a temporary blip in our march towards European football and the ' half empty ' brigade, like me, who see it as a period before our inevitable return to the Championship. I witnessed matches like the Southampton game every week in the late 60's but that doesn't mean I am happy with it in 2013 just because we are in the Premiership. Bottom of Div 1 and weeks from going out of business is a crisis - 14th in the Premiership, 9 points off the bottom 3 with only 9 matches to go is not a crisis BUT - and it is a very big but - that does not mean I should be happy at forking out the small fortune I spent on Saturday to watch that crap.
I have argued with most on here and as far as I am concerned long may it continue. On a personal note I have noted Redruth's absence on here lately - I hope he is not one who has taken umbrage as I greatly respect and look forward to his views on most subjects - 2 old farts together!!

Excellent post, but we demand photographic evidence of the shapely lovely when she returns! <laugh><ok>

The way we crowd round the front window is enough to get us arrested !! If I got my camera ( or anything else ) out I would get arrested and knowing my luck would end up sharing a cell with Chris Huhne. Imagine spending 6 months avoiding conversation with, or being mounted by, a Lib Dem MP!!!!!

Now there's a man who could tell us how to get three points! <ok>

Wow, morning here in Vietnam and I've woken up to this!

I've just gone through the entire thread. I can be open now and admit there have been times in the past - long before this current round of arguments between us - when I've considered not posting any more, and it wasn't because the discussion was too 'robust'. Without mentioning any names, I would rather be savaged than patronised.

I think everyone has different interpretations of what's been said. I've found it generally more entertaining of late with some good debate. I think some people are too easily offended and it would be a good idea if they didn't post on this forum, for themselves and others. Or just ignore comments they don't like, which seems pointless, just because if everyone done that there would be barely any debate on here.
