Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has told a Twitter follower: "I'll put u asleep within 10 seconds" after being provoked on the social networking site.

The 25-year-old England star, who has a following of over 570,000, was replying to an abusive tweet on Tuesday.

Rooney suggested a meeting at the training ground, tweeting: "hope u turn up if u don't gonna tell everyone ur scared u little nit. I'll be waiting."

In an effort to defuse the situation, Rooney tweeted: "Haha bit of banter".

The Twitter account belonging to the follower who taunted Rooney was subsequently deleted.

Funny guy Rooney, not that smart though. I guess I can't blame him given the abuse he gets but this is only going to be bad for him.
 
I doubt anyone will care to be honest. Babel questioned a referee's integrity on Twitter, and Cole made comments that bordered on racism and everyone's forgotten about them already. And didn't some Scottish footballers make tweets saying they wish Neil Lennon had been killed by those parcel bombs? I think Rooney's reaction will be forgotten in a week or so, probably as soon as the next celeb tweets something stupid.
 
The media bashing every footballer who so much as farts in public is getting boring now. If we don't even want to banter about it then the media are really getting it wrong.

With the amount of stick and ridicule that these young men have to put up with it's actually refreshing to see a player call someone out.
On the flip side, who would of thought that giving young, uneducated men millions of pounds and unlimited admiration they'd act like complete idiots?? :)

Exactly.
It's funny how the follower's comments aren't being displayed -Probably because they were full of swear words.
But then it doesn't matter what anyone says or does to a footballer, they should take it simply because they're famous/rich.

True to form, the Mail displayed all the comments.

The follower, "sam-oldham-LFC" said "Rooney ya fat whore ill smash ya head in with a pitchin wedge an bury ya with a ballast fork ya fat ugly lil nonse".
Rooney replied "haha u know were I train every day kid come and do it good luck".
The Liverpool fan then said "snd ill be down tomorrow lad in me twin turbo nissan micra".
Rooney replied with "I will put you asleep within 10 seconds hope u turn up if u don't gonna tell everyone ur scared u little nit. I'll be waiting".

Storm in a teacup much? I heard worse on the school playground. And I went to a grammar school!

It's quite clearly harmless from both sides.


The 'Pool fan probably didn't bank on any reply, and the 'twin Micra' bit leads me to think he was just taking the piss/ having a laugh more than actually threatining him. Rooney obviously felt this too.

He didn't think it would lead to all this, and has deleted his account -probably scared of the repercussions, and scared of being bombarded wth abuse himself.

The fact is Rooney, along with most high-profile footballers on twitter get this everyday. Which isn't fair in itself.

The funniest thing about this, as usual, is the schizo media response. Some of them are doing their standard "let's have Rooney's head on a stick" response, but others are whinging that footballers never actually reply to the tweets of the general public, only those of their celeb mates, and only post banal nonsense. So whaddya want guys, should they have some banter with the general public or should they stick to "What a great club I play for" and "Today I watched some TV"?

All this of course ignores that fact that Twitter is essentially just Facebook for people with ADHD...
 
Everyone takes everything so literal, and even if he was being serious do you think its not warranted? Ok footballers are paid ridiculous amounts of money and do things that dissapoints fans both on and off the pitch but the amount of jibes and threats, however meant, is unacceptable.

They bite back, or have a bit of banter and there hammered for it. Twitter is a great way of bringing players and fans together, long may it continue, but there will always be people who pointlessly abuse players.

It's nothing other than what i'd expect of them to be honest... they have a chip on their shoulder for most people...
There's even a 32 year old member who says he's gonna go on twitter tonight just to abuse Rooney and try to get a reaction <doh>

In all honesty Rooney just needs to realise his responsibilities and grow up a bit. He can't keep showing himself up week after week.
But he isn't the first celeb to say stupid things on twitter.
I guess this just highlights the level of abuse that these guys get, and they are human after all.

I think if most footballers got the level of constant media attention that Rooney did they'd probably show themselves up as regularly as he does. He ain't the sharpest tool in the box, but then most footballers aren't...
 
He's a human being at the end of the day. I challenge you all to sit back and take that kind of abuse.
 
Rooney is just a normal lad living the dream.

Hes fiery and hes a nutter but on the pitch hes one of the best around.

I for one like the fact rooney is just one of us mere mortals and has faults. He never goes to far and everything he gets stick for is trivial and most people do it.
