Are there any other 'they played for boths' people can think of other than Lloris and Steed? I know plenty of our players have had careers in France over the years but I can't think of any Lyon connections...

EDIT: Just remembered that Kanoute started out at Lyon pre-Spammers... Any others?

Friedel has only made two appearances since the turn of the year, in the FA Cup, and Villas-Boas has confirmed the American will continue in non-Premier League games.

He told reporters: “You’ve seen us do exactly the opposite in the Europa League in the past - particularly with Hugo when Brad was playing - and most likely Brad is going to be in goal.

“It’s a decision we have already taken.

“Obviously we know that this tie represents a lot to Hugo on a personal level because it is against his old club, but I think out of respect for Brad, and the confidence we have in him and what he’s been doing, we will continue to apply exactly the same principle as we applied in the past and rotate the goalkeeper.”

No offence to freidal, as he's still a top keeper, yet have we not learnt from the leeds match? We should play our best team, try and win the competition as friedal will be rusty with the lack of games.

I agree ,it's a mistake to play Friedel,we need a good result in the first leg,Lloris will know who the danger men are an how to prevent them scoring, better than Brad

I was led to believe that the plan is to play Brad tonight and then Lloris in the away leg next week, although AVB's comments don't really confirm that and suggest otherwise. Whatever, if Gallas plays as some newspapers are saying, then the high line which was hopelessly exposed against Leeds, will surely not be used as we will have to drop deeper to allow for Gallas's lack of pace.

As for playing our full strength side, I completely agree particuarly as AVB has said on several occasions this is a competition he wants to win.

Back in the day, Pat Jennings played in every first team match Spurs participated in and Ken Hancock, Barry Daines or whoever else was second choice simply bided their time.

I think we should be playing our strongest possible team against Olympique Lyonnais and that includes the goalkeeper, as I think the tie will be very tight and just one goal could make all the difference between progressing and being knocked-out.

Fix? Deliberately playing a weakened team against the second top team in France? Seems a tad dodgy to me. I wouldn't normally go down this path but there's a lot of it about.

I think notso is the man for europa league match threads although if he isnt about then i can do one tomorrow after work.

Sorry lads, been very busy lately, no spare time at all, good job guys!...sort of!...you got there in the end! <laugh>

<ok>

Here's some more hap-hazardly placed pre-match blurb!

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed that Brad Friedel, and not former Lyon man Hugo Lloris, will start in goal for Tottenham against the French club on Thursday. Striker Emmanuel Adebayor will lead the attacking line in the Europa League clash at White Hart Lane as Jermain Defoe is ruled out with an ankle injury. Long-term absentees Sandro and Younes Kaboul remain sidelined, but the latter should be available again in two weeks' time.

Lyon boss Remi Garde, a former Arsenal player <grr>, is expected to make alterations to a side which slipped to a 3-1 domestic defeat to Lille on Sunday. Yoann Gourcuff continues to struggle for regular game time, but he could be offered an opportunity to impress from the start in continental competition. Bafetimbi Gomis is also expected to be drafted into the starting XI to provide an added attacking threat alongside Lisandro Lopez.

MATCH FACTS:

Tottenham and Lyon previously met in the second round of the 1967/68 Cup Winners Cup. The tie ended 4-4 on aggregate with Lyon progressing on away goals.

Spurs are unbeaten in their last three matches against French opposition (W2 D1) although, they last played a side from France in 1971.

Olympique Lyonnais have won just one of their last nine fixtures against English sides (in all competitions), losing three.

The French giants have lost five of their eight previous trips to England (W2 D1).

Jermain Defoe has scored four goals in his last two starts in the Europa League.

Only Bayer Leverkusen (94) and Stuttgart (84) attempted more shots in the group stages of the Europa League than Lyon (83).

Lyon allowed their opponents to score four times in the 15 minutes after half-time; more often than any other side that qualified for the knock-out stages.

Kyle Walker (10) was one of only two defenders to create 10+ chances during the Europa League group stages (along with Stuttgart’s Gotoku Sakai).

Only Bordeaux (six) scored more goals in the opening 30 minutes of Europa League group stage matches than Lyon (five).

Emmanuel Adebayor has scored five goals in his last five starts in the Europa League.

Spurs 4/5, Lyon 7/2, Draw 5/2

Fair to say we're all in agreement!

I know Brad won't let anyone down with effort, yet he knows there no way back as number 1 (due to age) and I guess has accepted he's now just a back up keeper to give Lloris a rest, so I can't see Villas Boas thinking on this one.

I agree. I didn't mind Friedel starting against Leeds or Cudicini the year before against weaker opposition but I don't like the way 'Arry gave a 2nd choice 'keeper a whole competition and I don't like that AVB seems to be rotating Friedel in for the sake of it. I think it's idealistic but ultimately wrong to believe that you can swap 'keepers around and not harm your chances in the match, especially when 'keepers don't even need to be rested anyway.

AVB's thinking? Maybe, yes Brad is back up but keepers do get injured so it's as well to give some game time to him so that if the worst happens he doesn't have to come in on the back of a couple of months without a game.
