I know he was, but I'm making a serious point lest that argument is actually used, I can see Wenger using it, 'we didn't find any top quality'.
Those players aren't starters. Anyway if we sign someone it has to be a top class guy, not some squad player just for the sake of splashing the cash.
5 games in which he got subbed ~60 mins every time couldn't have been "immense" in any sense of the word. He was very average at Charlton as well based on their fans feedback.
I want us to strengthen, just to make that absolutely clear again. But I also don't want to see us sign somebody average just to appease the fans, that would be worse than not signing anybody at all.
Well even if they're not starters, does it hurt to have quality back up? Wenger said that we have 2 players in each position, well in many cases, the back up isn't good enough, I'm sure we can get better than Santos as number 2. And better than Coqualan as a defensive midfield option. Sometimes quality squad players can be exactly what you need. That's what elite teams do, they have an excellent starting 11, but what makes them go over the finish line, is that they have very good squad players waiting in the wings who can help out if needed. We don't have that, a lot of our squad players are deadwood who we can't even get rid of because why would they want to leave when they're getting paid excellent wages? Like Arshavin, why would he push to leave when he's on something like 90k a week doing nothing.
Well this season is already a write off, so 4th or maybe 3rd is the best we can do. Personally, I think we need to strengthen to improve our chances of 4th, but if Wenger thinks we're good enough now, he'll get a chance to prove himself. Fail and he's out. However, he needs to strengthen in the summer because 4th is simply not good enough. We should be challenging for the title. Now we apparently have money, failing to strengthen the first team over the summer would also make me call for his exit. I'm fed up with 4th places finishes as much as anyone.
Personally, I think it will take this window and the summer to even start to make inroads into challenging Chelsea, City and Utd.
Ivan shot himself and Arsene in the foot by saying the money is available. That makes us fans angrier when Wenger doesn't use the money to strengthen us.
Balls to giving him summer. He should walk after the last kick of the season if Arsenal don't finish 4th.
I think it was a deliberate move by the club. It pushes the attention away from the board and on to the coach.
We also potentially missed out on signing Luke Shaw when he signed his new contract. I been watching his performances since, and that kid is the real deal. Southampton have yet again produced another star. Hopefully, they will go down and we can buy him in the summer.
Wenger saying 2 players in each position, but most of thems players are like chocolate firegaurds . Having sub-stanandrd number 2s, who even Wenger doesn't like to play, gives the number 1s a complacent aire, knowing their places are not under threat. This is where Weneger has failed. Compare that to SAF, RM, Chelsea - all packs their squads with competition for places which means ecah player has to fight for his place. Chamack, Squillaci, Arshavin (alas) - would SAF have palyers in his squad who he just doesn't fancy? Plus, when SAF falls out with a player, because he buys qulaity other clubs are ready to buy. We buy no mark players who no one has heard of, then play them into the careers dead end, and then wonder why no one wants to buy them. Hate to say it, but we are very definitely now in reverse gear.
If we were to buy Shaw, some fans would be moaning about us buying a 17 year old with potential. It the same with Zaha,if we'd spent £15 on him some fans would be saying it'a a rediculous amount to spend on a second division player
