It also impacts how we are viewed, and contrary to what some think, it is important.

Thing is we will never how and why Adkins was sacked, we will also not know if Cortese did it some what politely with a thank you or not. So it just leads to more and more rumours and mud slinging that isn't helped by the **** media.

Can't help but agree with this........Sadly it is something we are going to have to get used to. Yes we all liked NA and a majority stuck by Cortese despite their misgivings. In truth though has he really made any mistakes up to now? We think he has, but only time will tell if he is wrong. On his past decisions which have pretty well been correct todate you have to say he has been spot on.......so why not now I guess......I still like our Nige though....still will give the new guy a chance........He sure has got a lot on his plate to start his career off......Everton....Man u......Do you think he will get results from these? Maybe 1 point possibly not sure of anymore......

This is my first post but having read through much that has been said since Friday I wish to say why I think Cortese should stay and why Nigel Adkins may have been seen by him as a good manager but not necessarily a great manager. Please note I do not claim to speak for any other fans, to be a football pundit or have any inside knowledge but just love watching Saints play.

When the club was bought by Liebherr at the recommendation of Cortese I was delighted as this meant the club was saved. Was in the Saints Megastore watching the TV screen when the news was revealed and all the staff had big smiles of relief on their faces.

Alan Pardew was hired as manager with some mixed views from the fans. He gave us the JPT and then started the following season with again some mixed reaction from fans about the pre-season. He was then sacked in what many thought was a surprise move after winning 4-0 at Bristol Rovers. Much speculation about the reason, could be that Cortese knew that at the end of day Alan Pardew would jump ship as soon as a ‘big club’ came for him so decided to let him go before he could jump, but I don’t know.
Many fans (not all) were then asking questions of Cortese and wanting him to have a plan B if he had sacked Pardew which big name was he bringing him to replace him. Well Cortese, who knows nothing about football, appointed a promising manager from Scunthorpe by the name of Nigel Adkins. Many were sceptical as was a relative unknown and not a ‘big name’.

Nigel took us up the league 1 table and I remember watching many very enjoyable winning games. The aim was to finish top of the league. We were beaten to the title by Brighton and then pushed all the way for 2nd place by Huddersfield. We won automatic promotion, which was fantastic, but in 2nd place not 1st which would have been Cortese’s aim (perhaps a target missed?).

In the Championship and going great guns from day one. Top two all season and with a couple of month’s to go expecting to go up as champions. We then started losing form and missed out on the top spot to Reading. We were then again pushed all the way to 2nd place by West Ham. Had a fantastic last game of the season to gain automatic promotion but again in 2nd place. Maybe a case of you don’t win silver you lose gold in Cortese’s eyes and another target missed.

Now in the Premier League which is the minimum requirement. There were already some fans worried whether Nigel could make it in this league and would probably have not been too worried if he had been replaced before the start of the season. Nigel started the season with spirited performances against the Manchester clubs but did let leads disappear and was also unable to hold on for a draw. I remember many fans questioning Adkin’s choice of subs especially after game against Utd.
Well we carried on with some bad results and some mediocre results. Some fans questioning whether Nigel could keep us in EPL but still being supportive. Whilst we are fighting relegation it is very difficult to bring the youth team through which Cortese had always said he wants to do more and more (a target Nigel could not fulfil in our present situation). If fans were worried about the relgation battle we were in, then pretty sure Cortese was more concerned and so started working on a plan B (which many fans criticised him for not having when sacking Pardew). We started putting in better performaces but still let a 2 goal lead go at Stoke and only won against Villa on a dodgy penalty so not a great performance. By now preparations were already in place for a successor to Nigel and whatever the result at Chelsea the decision had already been made. Now for, a man who knows nothing about football, Cortese seems to have appointed what could be a very inspirational coach with experience at playing at international level and managing in Europe.

There has been much said about the nature of Nigel’s sacking but unfortunately, in industry, when your boss decides that your services no longer meet the requirements of the company you do not get notice and you are quite often asked to clear your desk, taking only your personal belongings and walked out the building. A lot of emotion and sentiment has been shown because Nigel seemed like a pleasant person and doing what seemed to be a good job in a high profile industry. Unfortunately Cortese doesn’t want somebody to do a reasonable/good job but to do a great job. Hope that Mauricio Pochettino that live up to that expectation.

I think many of the players would have been surprise and upset by Nigel’s dismissal but others will not be so bothered as they had only started working for him this season. I also imagine that some will be excited by training with a footballer who has represented their country and has also managed in the Spanish league.
I shall wait and see what the future brings for Southampton football club but for the time being I want Cotese at the helm.

    COYR

PS Can’t wait to see Barcelona playing Champions League Football at St Mary’s (or a new stadium) and beating them at their own game by playing the ‘Southampton Way’!

What a turd burglar! Where do these people keep popping up from!

Running this club isn't a popularity contest, Cortese doesn't have many fans on a personal level but let's face it he hasn't made a single bad choice yet!

I will miss Adkins but he was employed to do a job, get us in the Prem and may I add he done that without fault!

I'm not saying its morally right but our new guy could take us to the next level!

When Cortese is proven right ...again, I hope fans like this dumb to$$er of a poster will finally pipe down.

Let's get behind the lads this evening and support the new management and even respect cortese decision as he is the boss and has worked wonders for Saints, if he buggered off tomorrow all you moaners might have something to whinge about!

    my feelings exact.

especially the bit about cortese persuading markus to buy us in the first place. if it weren't for cortese, we simply wouldn't be here.

he has come through on everything he has promised since day 1, he DESERVES our support and trust.

    Great post.

This decision was made when we were down in the mire and not after the Chelsea result. All the proof you need is to listen to Pochettino's first press conference when he said that he had been "researching the squad for a few weeks"

As gutted as I am for Nigel, we might just be on the verge of something...

Time will tell and I for one am reserving my judgement and looking forward to seeing the players turn it on for the new manager tonight. After all, they all have to fight for a place in the team again.

Why does everyone keep on saying this??? Yes hes done okay in his short career well adkins has done exceptionally. Why does everyone presume Adkins couldn't keep improving us. There has litterally not be a moment during his tenure when we went backwards just look at our recent form.
I know its done now but people seem to have just swallowed this without any though. Sure he COULD improve us so COULD I obviously he is more likely than me to do so but you get my point.l
