Signing another centre back. A pairing of Forren and Fonte is definitely good enough, Yoshida is solid and Hooiveld has been looking good recently. None of them need or deserve to be pushed aside.

... But they can be improved upon. We have to start thinking bigger like Cortese does. He is gradually looking to build a top team, not a surviving team.

Fonte is more than adequate.

Joe, the point for me here is that the last few days have shown me that "more than adequate" or "doing well" or "surviving" aren't expressions that sit well with Cortese. Like what he's done or not, the man is clearly on a mission. This ride is about to pick up speed; let's hope the bus is facing the right direction.

He is taking steps of improvement (in his eyes) every day.

That's the bottom line for NC survival wasn't enough and rightly or wrongly he felt that survival was all Nigel could achieve. I think we as Saints fans need to realise that our Chairmen has huge ambition for our club and just being in the PL is no longer enough!

I can't help but think the Astori deal is still on and that he may have been recommended by MP. After all he has said he has been researching the team and scouting in Spain and Italy. Can anyone clarify to me what position Coutinho plays as it seems he is in the same mould as Ramirez? If he can play on the left or right then I would understand it but if he is more like Ramirez I am unsure why we would sign him.

How is it that everyone thinks we are better than our current position, was NA not getting 100% out of the players? Is the new guy going to see a amazing turnaround with luck, you know, those deflections that had been flying in off our players are suddenly going to be at the right side of the post? I hope you are not too dispondent when we get our arses kicked tomorrow, because even if we turn up, I sense a bucket load of confusion against a well drilled Everton.
For me, this experiement can only end badly.

Coutinho can play out wide or in the middle just behind the striker.

Agreed. Just because a player is "good enough" does not mean they cannot be improved upon.

We had a similar thing last year when people questioned the need to sign Fox. Even putting my low opinion of Harding to one side, signing Fox didn't neccessarily simply mean that we thought LB was a weak area for us. That's far too simplisitic, far too black and white. Signings players can be a tool to improve and grow a team, not just repair a weak area.

I can only assume that we're going to signing another player or two over these next ten days, otherwise making the managerial change now would make even less sense to me.

With our current squad, I don't see any manager getting more out of these players than Nigel has been, as you say.

Yep, no manager could realistically get more out of the current squad than our Nige was. Yet another reason why it was such a terrible decision to make

A bit of defeatist talk round here. We could have lost against Everton anyway, but our chances haven't necessarily diminished much as we have the same players. We note that we have been improving in our results, but for all we know Poch may have better ideas than Nigel and the players will respond to it. I'm not saying it will happen, but give the new guy a chance.

The timing could be quite good...we've had a few days to get over the shock...Poch will have one game to look at the team without massive expectations from the fans as he has just started....then we have a break. Nigel mentioned a bit of sun, so perhaps a few days away in a suny spot and Poch and the team can get to know each other. COYR

I'd say if anything we've got more of a chance, all the work moyes and his staff will have done scouting us will have been thrown out the window when Nige left! He is as much in the dark as we are about how we are going to set up on monday!
