brb looking past the age issue I think we were a much better side with Wright in the team than we have been with Payne. Don't get me wrong I like Payne but his performances have gone stale and he will probably prosper with a new challenge.

I still feel this would be a positive move for our promotion push should the rumour be true.

Ok, now things are clearer, that story from gillsconnect is misleading, I found this link and it appears the idea is to LOAN an unnamed Gills young midfielder (Payne?)...

I don't like the idea of that, is this happens I think that is stupid because why should we let him go on loan.

I can see the logic from Palace's side of things. Take Jack on loan until the end of the season and see where they finish. It may be if they get promoted they will have money to spend on foreign high earners. Gives them time to see how he fits it etc.

It is a loan each way.

Good bit of business, if Payne cuts the mustard over there we could get a nice little payday in the summer for a permenant move. Jack will not stay here forever as much as some people want him too, might as well make a few quid on him and have a decent player to replace him in the squad to boot.

I know he will go in the future but I would rather keep him as I believe he will get better, I know he has not got as good as we thought he would when he started when he was 16 but he is still a good player and I think that he still plays a big role at the club however Wright is a good player but one problem is that the age of this team is not just creeping up it is flying up. At one point we had a young team now it is becoming a much older squad.

Might need to update your Avatar Hoadie ? At the start of the season the two team kit "models" were seen as the future of the club, not quite sure where it lays now ?

So what if the age goes up right now. Our ONLY goal is to get out of league 2. Older heads help.

When we are moving up again we can look at younger players and building a lasting team. Right now we want smart old players, thugs and muscle.

Thats what wins you league 2. I know it is not a popular opinion but it is the truth, you might want nice football to watch but facts are nasty, route one, big lumps are what win you this league.

Bang on the nail and well spotted eltorro. Even I overlooked that one! That avatar probably sums up the situation more than any words.

I had not noticed that, I will have to have a look for something.
I know that older heads are good to get promoted with but MA said he is building a team so that we are ready for League 1 but then when we get promoted if the aim is to get younger players why wouldn't we start building around the youth now instead of once we are promoted as it would be much harder for them once promoted?
I do understand the bit about nasty football as we tried to play more high standard football last season but it did not work a lot of time as I could say at times we played better, defiantly at home but that did not work at home at all but this season we are doing a great job away from home where we are tough.

I think what he is building for league 1 is a spine.

    Nelson
    Legge
    Gregory

Thats the spine of the team, now he builds from it.

As to our form my gut would say we are better bringing in a classy 1 month loan player, someone from a higher division on big money maybe young or returning from injury to break the run at home.

Gregory? Not from what I see in the first game.
I would say our spine of the team is
    Stuart Nelson
    Matt Fish
    Leon Legge
    Chris Whelpdale

I would say Barrett but he is a bit older so he will not have as long in the team as he may have a few years but he is not long term future, Davies on the other hand will be.

Fish is not yet a League 1 player, and Gregory is decent, tough introduction for him against Pope Vale, coming on while the team is rushing forward and being expected to create.

    He will improve, and rapidly.

I hope so and I think Fish will be good enough next season.

    Couldn't agree more Throwoff.

Jack Payne is an excellent player and extremely promising. However I reckon David Wright will have (and already has had) more influence on our promotion aspirations.

I hope and expect that (if this deal goes ahead) there are stipulations regarding a fee in the summer if Palace want to keep him and a nice hefty sell-on clause. And probably that we would get Wright permanently probably on a free. David Wright is definitely good enough for L1 (if we get there) right now.

And supposing Jack doesn't impress or get much 1st team action and comes back, I think his value would still be there for next season. And he would have had 4 months of playing and training with Championship standard players.

I think this is a win/win/win/win situation for 2 clubs and 2 players. Especially if we couldn't afford David Wright any other way.

I don't think you'd call left backs and wingers 'the spine'.
Fish & Whelps are probably 2 of our best players. But the spine is keeper/center half/center midfield/center forward.

    I reckon our spine would/should be -

    Nelson
    Legge
Wright (if we get him) as the holding midfield

Whelps (if played in the middle further forward as he should)

Forward - should be Keds but needs more confidence/goals

And shuffle the rest of the team around that.

Getting us out of this division is all that matters at this moment in time and i really feel david wright is the link we are missing...i rate the guy be it a short or longterm fix. sad to lose jack payne, but replaceable he is and as long as the overall deal going to palace is right for GFC i'm happy <ok>

I fail to see the long term loss.
There is no way Jack Payne is ever going to be staying at Gills long term.
It is just a matter of how and when he leaves us.

This deal seems perfect to me in that we are getting a ready-made top class (for us) player who we know will make a difference to us because he already has made that difference this season. If he is the difference between going up and staying down then it is a no-brainer.

The only sticky part is how much (if anything) we will be getting for Jack in the summer. That is now all down to Jack himself. Unless, of course, those details have already been agreed.

This deal has to be even better than just selling him for, say 400k? We'd have to then maybe spend some of that trying to get a player to fill that void. This way, we already have him.

You also have to consider that Jack himself probably wants to play higher up the leagues. Be very selfish if we denied him that. Counterproductive too.
