So, I'm sure we're all aware of Derek Llambias' 'colour' system. But for those who aren't, the basic premise is that we grade our players by shade (sit down Rio Ferdinand, this has nothing to do with race) our Elite players are known as 'Purples' then the covering players (I'm going to assume they're lilac) and development players (lets got ahead and call them pinks).

This is a system which on paper looks fanstastic. The aim is to have 11 top players who can, on their day, beat anyone in the league. We have a further 11 'Lilac' players who can easily provide cover, stepping in to plug gaps if our 'purple' players are unfit and we have 11 'Pink' players who we rotate, giving experience and occasional playing time. It's so simple, its so obvious, why didn't anyone think of it before?

...'cause it clearly doesn't work. We all knew we needed to strengthen in the Summer. Our manager and players spent the majority of last season telling the media that 'we're a small, tightknit squad', whilst our fans simply said we need more players. Instead of strengthening in the summer, we let our 'Lilac' players go, choosing cheaper, inexperienced alternatives, hoping that they wouldn't be called upon.

Our recruitment policy is a good one, I like that we don't over-pay for players, as someone said on another thread, we got Debuchy and Cabaye for the price of Connor Whickham - but surely Llambias can now see that applying a sound business model to a football club (something that has so many massive variables) doesn't equate to success!

The question is, will he do anything about it? Do you see us abandoning (if only momentarily) the colour grading system in order to stay in the league? Do you think they will stick to their guns and hope to ride out the storm? Do you think some of our 'purples' have been downgraded and are now 'pinks' and the 'pinks' now a murky shade of '****' brown?

As I've said before. This season is a wake up call to Cashley and Llambarse. IMO it could be good for the club. We might lose a couple of players in the summer, we might fall short of our targets, but it will be a harsh lesson that we need to spend in order to gain success.

Last season was fantastic. It was a platform to build on, and we should have spent cash bringing players in to keep ourselves up there, but we decided "the players weren't available at the right prices, so we decided to wait" <doh>

****ing idiots. Pardew, Ashley and Llambarse all to blame. Ashley and Lamb's testicles no **** all about football, and will most likely blame players. Pardew, despite his good attributes, is a ****ing pussy who is too scared to bollock Ashley, and make them realise that cash needs to be spent.

I think we could have a great future. I think if we make a surge forward now, we can finish strongly in the top 10. Next season, if we get the right players in and go into the season with PROPER squad depth, we can finish in the top 8, and perhaps challenge for top 6.

Some people may call me deluded, but with the players we have available and the fans turning up at every game, and the amount of tickets sold, why not?

We have a solid platform on which to build on, and last season was a gift from the gods.

Fair comments, don't think it's deluded to be aiming for top 8 next season (pushing for top 6) IF as you say we can bring in the right players and mount a push this season...if we scrape survival or worse, there will be huge 'come and get me' signs over our best players and we won't have the bargaining chips to keep em!

If Southampton win their game in hand over us, we'll be down to 16th in the league.

Hope the people in the realms of power are keeping a close eye on proceedings. It'll cost them big time if we don't stay up.

I really don't see Llambias/Ashley backing down from anything they put in place - i Feel sure they will plough on with the system until we're looking at Barnsley away as a fixture. <doh>

Let's hope somebody sees sense before we pay the ultimate price.

I'm not going to hold my breath <cheers>
