I understand where you're coming from, but I am tempted to disagree.

Cortese has always come across to me as someone who is prudent and has a plan B. Of course he will want nothing else but survivial this season, but I've long had the feeling that he will want to make sure that we have the best possible chance of coming straight back up should the worst happen.

We'll have to disagree....rightly or wrongly I honestly don't think relegation is on Cortese's mind.

Only rumours I know but apparently Cortese is in Italy offering £8m and £35 grand a week wages for a player.....impetuous maybe but not a man with relegation on his mind......do hope that famous quote does not come back to haunt him!!

Cortese has already stated that we will not be relegated under his leadership. You sayin' his words were hollow?

The thing with Astori is that, like Ramirez, if we are relegated we will be quite easily able to get him off the wage bill if necessary. Indeed they will likely not want to stick around anyway, but even if they do £35k/week in the championship is hardly unheard of these days and with parachute payments we would be able to cover that. West Ham had players earning £60k last season after all!

I'm sure the powers that be have a contingency plan if we are relegated. It would be imprudent not to plan for that eventuality even if it were highly unlikely.

Nolan was on 80k wasn't he?

Seems little point keeping people as a "just in case" if the worse did happen and our better players left for pastures new we would have enough of a budget from those sales to get more than adequate replacements and players with potential to step up.

Without trying to sound like a typical panicking saints fan, I really do hope Fonte's injury forces Nigel to pull his finger out rather than take almost the entire window to get players. Villa and Everton with only 2 centre half's worries me. Think we need 2 now at a minimum.

I don't think it will be Nigel's finger that may need pulling out. He's already said he sat down in a meeting weeks ago and they settled on targets.

Now it is for the Chairman to do the deals...

Astori tweeted: "Peccato..bella partita ma 0 punti..meglio non polemizzare e rimboccarci le maniche..forza Cagliari!!!"

Meaning:
Too bad .. better game but 0 points .. better not to argue and roll up our sleeves .. force Cagliari!

Booooo. We want signs of distress, for ****'s sake.

Or just an all out "**** Cagliari".

I would be concerned if we sold Hoover, we need to shift Seabourne and Martin first as both of those are miles off the pace whereas Hover isn't that far off as shown by a good solid performance against Stoke.
We need to shift those players that will never make it rather than those that give 100% and struggle a bit against the very best

I agree...there are players who aren't quite good enough for us if we are to achieve our ambitions, but can play as a back up and will probably have some good games. Others aren't PL standard at all...however, these are the ones hard to shift. Adkins pointed out that some are on good money because of two promotions and are effectively priced out of moves. I know some of you will say they should move to play football, but if you have a mortgage and a family could you afford to give up a couple of years on good money.

...................Now it is for the Chairman to do the deals...

The problem is our Chairman can't stand fools and as we all know there are far too many of them in football. When confronted by some of the idiots posing as agents or chairmen his tolerance threshold is reached within seconds and from then on you might as well forget all about any prospect of a signing.

Agreed.... We don't need to panic just yet..... yesterday's game against the current Champions League holders (who I think are playing better than they did in that comp last year because of having better players) and the current FA cup holders will not dictate our league destiny.

We need to continue to buy the mix of potential and current ability at a sensible price-simple as that.

Fontes injury is a concern, but I'd trust Hoover as long as the crowd aren't on his back. The abuse a lot have put in his direction this year has been hard to understand as he has been a very consistent performer for us last season.... Agreed I think he was found wanting due to the pace of the league at the start of the season.... Doesn't mean he's a terrible player.
