I would like to see Boruc given another go too. Has only had a brief appearance and neither Gazza nor Davis have proven that they are too good to drop. However Adkins see's him in training so he must know whats what. This transfer window is going to be an interesting one that's for sure. If we are to survive than we are going to need to bring in 3 - 5 players of sufficient experience and/or quality to help keep us in this league. Cortese's battle plan will make for an interesting and hopefully exciting window.

Nixon saying Saints are back in for Jack Butland.

Says Birmingham have to sell unless a takeover materialises sharpish. Saints still sniffing around him with a clear interest.

I hope that isn't true. We have Gazza for the future. We need a GK to slot straight into a PL team battling to avoid relegation.

This window is going to be a very difficult balancing act imho, as we can't sign too many without offloading some of the fringe players. Getting promoted two seasons running means we are still carrying a few L1 players (Dickson/Butterfield) as well as the more recent championship ones that won't find much playing time at this level (De Ridder/Hooiveld), but having squad unity is key to our progress.

Trying to keep grounded, I'd say realistically just a CB and a winger in maximum this window. GK and others will follow next summer once some of the dead wood have had contracts expire on them.

Am I right in thinking the following all expire this summer, or are any wrong/have I missed any?

Boruc/Dickson/Reeves/Hooiveld/Richardson/Butterfield/Chaplow/Puncheon. Think there's only Puncheon from this list that's even worth considering an extension on.

Am I imagining it or have we lost interest in loaning players out for experience. We seem to only do it when the player is on their way out at Saints. I think Saints believe that the best place to learn is at Saints and they don't want players to learn bad habits.

Morning Fran! Interesting point. We have Hammond and Billy out on loan but yes none of the promising youngsters whereas Hoskins and a couple of others were sent out last season.

[h=1]Arsenal favourites to sign Luke Shaw?[/h]

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to signSouthampton left-back Luke Shaw.

The 17-year-old England youth international, who has made 10 Premier League appearances this season, is also understood to have attracted the attention ofChelsea.

However, Arsene Wenger has done business with Southampton in the past, taking Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from St Mary's.

According to the Daily Mail, Wenger will attempt to use the relationships that he has built with the Saints hierarchy to land Shaw for a fee in the region of £5m.

Wenger's Gunners will come face to face with Shaw on New Years Day when Arsenal visit the Saints for their first fixture of 2013.

There are rumours circulating that the Saints are the only club to have made an official bid at this point, with a €10 million fee being talked about.

Maybe he's gotten an advanced screening of the DVD.

The Serie A is definitely the place to do your shopping right now, the big teams are too broke to buy anyone decent domestically, and the little teams are too broke to keep hold of their stars. Shame, but I still hope we pick them apart like a vulture.

Perhaps he watched the DVD followed by Match of the Day last night. 35 goals yesterday and very entertaining to watch. Also perhaps with us already having Ramirez it may make him and others (hopefully talented keepers) in Serie A believe we are building something for the future.

I'm definitely in favour of Boruc coming back, but I think Mikey is right, we could do with looking on the continent for a new keeper. Would Ron-Robert Zieler be out of our reach?

Well I think he's looking for bigger things than Hannover, but has a £12m release clause slapped on him and a contract through to 2015 I think, so we're unlikely to be able to snatch him for anything less than that even if he did want to come to us. Big plus point for him would be considering he was at United for 5 or so years he must know a good amount of English. But I think he's too pricey and in too strong demand.

In regards to Shaw, £5m is laughable. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him head to a big team in the next couple of years unless we can stay in the league and then really crack on, don't really know why but just strikes me as someone who would jump at the opportunity of going to a team like Arsenal, Chelsea, United etc. What's important from our point of view is tempting him into a nice £25k/£30k a week contract and wrap him up until 2017 to make sure we get our money's worth!

Saints can only tie up Luke Shaw to a 3 year pro-contract when he turns 18. Before that, he can leave and the fee is decided by tribunal unless the clubs agree a compensation fee.

Shaw isn't 18 til July.

I put that in bold so perhaps it will sink in for fans and any watching media types.
