Astori would be an incredible signing!

But didnt he turn down a 15 million Euro move in the summer? I think it's well possible he has changed his mind as Cagliari seems doomed and anyway and he would probably be helping the club by leaving. Just seems unlikely someone wouldnt offer more than 10 million Euros.

Astori and Ogbonna!!? Future of Italy's defense, and while we're at it, sign a goalie from serie A, theyre all skint and want monies, we have monies and need for players, lets get the ball rolling with early signings, no more long winded fiascos, my red and white pinstriped heart simply cannot take another one!

Astori AND Ogbonna would be ridiculously incredible, either one would be fantastic.

Think the Ogbonna ship has gone tho, had our chance in August but we got messed about. He will go to a much bigger team now, which is a shame.

Well, either one will do, but why not go for broke, would take us to a new level! Italians are notoriously good at defending...

We are all assuming that players will go straight into our team but unless they are exceptional it may take time to integrate them. Can we afford exceptional and are such players available in January? Be exciting to see.

So we all want a new keeper, but who?

I would've wanted Butland before the season but not now, **** yet another unreliable keeper.

Agreed, Butland is as risky as Paulo. Its a tough one, but we can ill afford anymore mistakes in that department......both on & off the field.

Brad Friedel on loan to the end of the season. If we are looking for a more permanent replacement than I'd like Al Habsi, Mignolet, Ruddy or Vorm however all could be costly and unlikely to want to make a sideways move. I'm sure there are some good goalkeepers to be had other than the Premier League but we need someone who is proven at this level in my opinion.

Plenty of decent options out there but I think it's incredibly unlikely we'll get a keeper who is experienced and not over the hill. I think we have to go young again, but slightly more experienced than Paulo.

There's a strong crop of young German keepers, Ter Stegen (out of our reach most likely but Gladbach are floundering a touch compared to expectations so who knows), Zieler, Trapp, Leno, Baumann, Ulreich, all worth a look.

If we want to scavenge the Serie A some more, I like Andrea Consigli from Atalanta, and I'm fairly sure (but don't quote me) that his contract is out in the summer.

Also a couple of good keepers in France, like Ospina and Ahamada, and Brazil also have some keepers coming up.

Definitely options out there but I think we're kidding ourselves if we think we can sign a solid 30 year-old PL stalwart, it's going to be someone who's coming to the end and no longer wanted or someone young and not entirely proven, in the Premier League anyway. Our main problem is that Goalkeeper is not a position teams like to chop and change, and certainly not in January, so we're unlikely to get any legitimate no.1s without paying big, only aging back-ups like Given, Robinson, Gomes etc. would be available, and to use the word hasbeens when describing them would be cruel, but somewhat accurate, so who knows if they would benefit us or just add to your GK conveyor belt.

Goalkeepers mistakes will nearly always prove to be more damaging than those of defenders. Even the best can make them but they then compensate with some act of brilliance that keeps a team in a game. Sadly I feel that Kelvin has lost his legs and is on a downward spiral. Boruc seems to have been a gamble that failed which leaves us with Paulo and Cropper. Hardly a fact that will engender belief in our fans or team that all is well in the keeping department.

For us to go for another keeper would be an admittance that we got it wrong but I honestly can't see an alternative. The choice is that or gamble on Paulo learning his craft and making enough error free games to give us hope. If we bring in another keeper that will immediately let the others know that we have no confidence in them which could do irreparable damage to Paulo and his future with us.

    Some choice.

Not if we loan Gazza out saying we want him to gain more experience.

re. the keeper situation - I think it's Boruc time. I am happy to say that when he first rocked up I was unimpressed that he clearly weighed as much as a small car. If anyone has had a close look at him in the last couple of warmups at SMS he has lost a serious amount of weight, and actually looks like an athlete. If he's put that amount of work in he clearly values a shot at this, or he would have sat around getting porkier until his contract expires in the summer. Lets see what he's got.

I'm definitely in favour of Boruc coming back, but I think Mikey is right, we could do with looking on the continent for a new keeper. Would Ron-Robert Zieler be out of our reach?

Love Tancredi's tweet that if our bid was €10 million, the Cagliari president would fly him to us on his lap haha!

Oh I really do not think he was that bad. Gazzaniga had worse games and kept his place.
