Snips was from Brid and his first band was Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather. Then He formed Nothineverappens which (I think) was out of That Feeling. Nothin... used to play at the Brickhouse and were managed by Hull Brick Company. They were all my mates - we lived in each others flats and houses, had lots of laughs together. Snips/ Roy Neave/ John Bentley/ Keith Hale - and the drummer who was a different kind of kid (and I don't remember his name!) After Nothin... Snips was in Heartshine and then he signed to Island Records and joined Andy Fraser and Chris Spedding in Sharks (probs mid-70's)
Going back to school, I went to Hull Grammar, and when it snowed, we used to make our way to Kelvin Hall to challenge them to a " snowball fight ". Always ended in a stand off, with dinner ladies and teachers in between . Hilarious
I felt old when I went round the transport museum when I remembered the bikes and had bought ice-creams from the shop that's in there now but was on pier.
I can't remember it's name, but they had another one - you passed it on a bus, behind White Lion, as you left the bus station.
I remember a cig and sweet 'booth' on Whitefriargate before it was pedestrianised. It was on the left about three shops down from monument bridge. It was more of a hole in the window than a booth, but when I mention it people just look blank. Did I imagine it?
I left in 86 (our kid in 85) Used to catch the 22, with Nick Brown ( who was in my class, and played for City ( was a really good guy) Also had my Thompson cousins, who were older, went to Grammar.( also lived across from my Grandparents, on 21st ave, but not when I lived there) Yourself?
my sister Hubby Eric use to swim in Barmy drain nr the cooling towers....told me he knew a lad with webbed feet ? i use to nip over old man ellis"s wall and nick a couple of empty soda syphons im sure we got half a crown or 5bob for taking back an empty one.... Cheap QC or VP sherry in a lemonade bottle that we would always throw back up having swigged a bottle of the stuff on a sunday before the voodoo dosco , hunting out a bottle of lady esquire conditioner to sniff as well... Taking to many mandrex tablets at leo schultz school and getting carried out of class on a stretcher after attacking Mr Hockey....that wasnt me.... everyone remembers those hot cakes with loads of butter on... bread and dripping sandwiches [ i know i spell **** i hardly went to school if i could help it ) got the tennis bat on my arse @ hall road infants the slipper at green huts juniors and the cane at leo schultz seniors often !
I have not got a clue what Lady Esquire Conditioner is, we all used to sniff dry cleaning fluid and nail varnish.( no wonder I can't spell ). For some reason, Leo Schultz was destined to fail. Was it the calibre of the teachers?
i liked Mr Hockey that was it..... though there was a blonde female teacher Called Miss Harding who wore mini skirts that all the lads loved to bits.. Mr Hunt the headmaster was a right eerrr Hunt, or something sounding like Hunt i avoided going to school as often as i could there was a girl whose mum and dad went out to work who lived on greenwood ave and half the class would be sat in her place having coffee and smoking instead of going to school
Grew up on De La Pole ave like a couple of others on here and also went to Paisley, but more recently than you guys I think. I've hardly ever spoke to anyone who's even heard of Paisley so it's nice to know for sure it did actually exist and two other people went there. Also had a bit of an up-bringing in Hessle and went to secondary school there. I'm a bit younger than most on here so I don't have much interesting to share but it's nice to read all your memories.
I also went to Sir Leo Schultz, it was a zoo, my first week there all the kids went on strike ( no idea why) police chasing us all round ope for the rest of the day, fights with Cooper, happy days.
Yup I remember Fred running the youth Club ... Got told he walked out infront of a train and killed himself .. No idea why he did that ... The school had a good footy team though I wasn't good enough to get in ...
I'm glad I started this thread as I've read all the posts and liked the stories, although as a kid I was brought up on bransholme when I moved into my teenage years I lived down Carnaby Grove and went to hall rd junior, I remember all the games mentioned wallee, marbles, with glamogs, bulldog all was great back then in the 80's, Got my first flat back in around 1989/90 in milldane which is the only one still standing, knew alot of people if anyone knows them Paul shimmon, john and donna tock, mark Randerson, Paco, mark Lawson, mark senior, great times, also knew greenwood pub too, went to school with the kid who died outside, was that a reason it closed??
