As far is football is concerned, it's certainly not all on one side of the Trent, the two football clubs are opposite each other on either side of it.
The banks of the Trent next to the ground are quite high, I don't know how full it gets when it's pissing down, but I would have thought it would take a massive rise in the water level to make it overflow next to the ground.
