I really liked Kingmaker.The bass player Miles appeared on Top of the Pops in a city shirt as well.I think it was the green and white gingham check away one from the 1990/ 1991 season.
Paul Heaton took to slagging them off for being middle class pretenders.Why he felt the need to do that is anyones guess, the bell end.

One of Kingmaker was the cousin of a mate of mine, so I saw them a few times, they weren't bad.

Bizarrely, that mate of mine got a hotel for his 21st birthday present, it's on Anlaby Rerd and his name in Max, I assume some on here will have had a pre match drink there occasionally?

I got a gold chain for mine.

His old man owned the Cave Castle and the Albert Hotel went bust just before Max's 21st, so as it was going cheap he bought it for a song and put his son in charge.

Unfortunately, he couldn't make any money out of it either.

Not that he's bothered, he's currently living in Antigua.

also did you go to the hotel bar in center bar? on sunday nights for the soul night?
i lived next door to a guy called ewen callahan [spelling] at me mams down stanley street,i believe he stayed in london with the lads you mentioned.
noy sure but i heard he hung himself there as well.
i used to go around with the lads off o.p.e. and used to have a lot of banter with the smoothie crowd.
maybe at some time our paths have crossed!!!

wow there's a flash back for me. Centre Bar and Trog Bar were part of the City Centre 'track' that also included Cheese, Dram Shop and Punch. Sunday night in Cheese with Steve Massam before they extended through to next door was always a rocking night! Always remember his regular Sunday night old Dylan sign-off song: "Its All Over Now, Baby Blue" by Graham Bonnet. On a Thursday, Friday and Saturday, that 'track' was always a preamble to the former death trap night club, Beer Keller down Bishop Lane. Most of my wages as an apprentice sparks went straight up the wall on the way home in those days. Oh happy days!
 
I used to know Paul Cook, he took an active interest in my old original band. He wanted to sign us up to his management firm, Diamond something or other. We used to rehearse round the back of Adelphi and he turned up un-announced one night, this was before I'd met him mind, and he nearly got my guitar round his head! The rest of the band knew him though so stopped me. He then proceeded to play a beat on the drums looking at us as if to say "can you tell what it is yet". However the drum beat to Smooth Operator was lost on us! I thought he was a bit odd, seemed to talk in riddles most of the time.

Is this the mighty Afterglow? Still have the Indie Afterglow CD single in my car! haha
 
I used to frequent most of the bars mentioned, the Trog Bar was a regular haunt(it's amazing what you can do with some chicken wire and papier-mâché), I used to like the Beer Keller too(weird dj in a horse cart) and we used to spend a fair bit of time in New York(Anlaby Rerd, not America!).

I never really knew Cookie, he was around but wasn't over friendly, it was only really Stuart that I was good mates with.

Cookie has posted his view on his time with Sade, it's quite interesting, the crazy drugy mentioned is my brother-in-law <laugh>

It was indeed Afterglow, however I would say "mighty" is a bit strong haha!

Jesus, that must sound terrible now, we recorded that after 6 weeks together as a band!

I didnt like it that much at the time, so it must sound bad now! Safe to say I havent listened to it in a long long time!
 
Beer Keller was owned by some guy Evans wasn't it - use to play Union for Hull & East Riding. Sad when they closed it down on fire safety grounds. One access & egress - potential deathtrap but great times jumping the queue to get in.

Trog Bar -younger brother used to serve in there and loved the place.

Centre Bar always a bit dodgy.

Those were the days when time was called at 10.30 FFS.
 
I'm not really into the music scene much at all, but I can't help but feel the timing's out. With all this warm weather we're having, it just won't seem right hearing Noddy scream out 'it's chriiistmas'
 
I'm so clueless about music, I don't even know why someone's waving a stuffed humpty at him. Is it a Noddy in toyland thing?

I've heard of the Gondola Club, but being open in the 60's, it was before my time. Thanks to google - It was in Little Queen Street and owned by a bloke called John Science, who was also manager of Sheffield based band The Citadels, who were apparently quite successful.
