Gazza's was the best I've read. Equally funny and sad.

I don't read many - Shack, Bestie, Phillips - but the one which really came as a shock was 'El Diego' by Maradona. To me, he's the greatest of them all, but I never thought I'd like the man much. The way he struts onto the field as though he owns it (and after 90 mins, he usually does!) never appealed to me. He comes across as too arrogant and full of himself. What a shock! What a genuine human being he turns out to be, far more concerned for the feelings of people than for any ego trip. For example, whilst he doesn't get along with Pele, his biggest criticism isn't about egos, but "And I don't like the way he let Garincha die in poverty without once going to visit him." After watching a Presidential election in Argentina, he felt so sorry for the loser (who he'd never met) that he went round, knocked on the man's door, and asked if he needed somone to talk to!

If you haven't read it, please do. What a lovely human being!

I'll do just that on your advice.

I've long been an admirer of Diego mind, saw a fantastic documentary on him whilst living abroad a few years back, and it gave me exactly the same feling as you, a man passionate about his country and his people.

I'll get it tomorrow, if i can find it <ok>

I love them, albeit, that most football biogs are "ghostwritten". Must try local library for Maradonna's.

<applause><applause><applause> ...and this is the reason I rarely bother. Most footballers can barely string a sentence together verbally, however, a friend gave me a copy of Gazza's and found it uproariously funny in parts.

Thanks for the Diego recommendation - can I also recommend John McEnroe's 'A Rage For Perfection'?

Usually some copies of El Diego on e-bay.

Knives + Shameless - I'm a massive fan of both Gazza and McEnroe. I'll get these - thanks.
