I don't really think that taking him alive was an option for the Americans as it would have given him a world stage in the courts to promote more of his hatred and bile.
What I do find off putting is seeing so many Americans celebrating his death by waving flags in the streets.

ten years of searching, tens of thousands dead, and a vile man coming to his just end. a little celebration seems in order.
 
A number of years ago i spoke to an old army friend. He told me that a british infantry unit had verified Bin Ladens location in Afghanistan shortly after the invasion. However they were prevented from going in by commanding US forces, as they wanted the glory. Unfortunately the time taken for US forces to arrive was more than enough to allow bin laden to leave!

Do you honestly think the death of this individual is going to change things for the better?
The fact is that organised religion has for thousands of years been responsible for mass killings in the name of "God", or any other name that they wish to call it, and the death of this vile person is not going to change that.
Yes, be greatful that he is gone, and I could understand people who lost family having grounds to celebrate. However, for the masses to hit the streets shouting USA, USA, I found a little off putting.
 
Conspiracy theory #1: they knew it was Osama and they wanted him alive (the head-shot was a mistake)

Conspiracy theory #2: This happened on 26th April and they didn't want to announce it as the Royal Wedding may have been a target for extremists radicalised Muslims

Conspiracy theory #3: the non-honeymoon, non-starter was known and preplanned in terms of announcing the deferal.
 
The reason given why the operation to capture/kill Bin Laden took as long as 40 minutes, was that the American forces were held up by a yet unidentified individual who turned up carring a six pack of lager, some chicken legs and a fishing rod!<laugh>
