Nugent would have been judged to be offside even if he hadn't of touched it. He was standing next to the keeper in an offside position with the ball going in his direction so he would have been deemed active
We'll never know for sure - if he had made an overt effort to dodge it the ref was better placed whether he altered anything - the keeper would not have had got there and his vision wqas not obscured - but what irritated me was that Nugent was so dim as to try and touch it anyway ..
is that 40% chance he'll get the ball 50% chance the keeper will get the ball and 10% Vardy will get the keeper
I realised that I had pressed the wrong key afterwards but as nobody had picked up on it I thought either there was no interest in my post or alternatively you were all maths teachers in the school where Charlie teaches English ...
I would have been more angry at Nugent if the ref missed the offside and Nugent left the ball to go wide! It's just one of those spot decisions, and I think Nuge reacted as a striker should.
... have to disagree .. someone like Bergkampf would have weighed it up in that split second ... but each to his own opinion ... and always happy to agree to disagree .. (and it was going in!!!)
You cant be 100% sure Andy King's shot was going in. As i said weather he touches it or not the flag was always going to go up. Nugent was next to the keeper and St. Ledger was on the line
I thought the shot was going wide. Also I was actually rather impressed that Nugent's reaction was to flick the ball into the net - is what you want from a striker isn't it, goal scoring to be instinctive.
Hm where to start? Nugent has never been an instinctive goalscorer - which is why he drifts away from central striker as much as he does .. and that's where I struggle in terms of his overall worth as a starter in the team..
Why? .. he was virtually anonymous in a very good team performance last weekend... .. personally I'd love to see Vardy paired with a real target man like Heskey (not convinced on Futacs yet I must say - but early days) - and with service from Marshall and Dyer (Knockaert/Schlupp) with a rejuvenated Andy King just behind and Drinkwater (Danns) suplying the energy in the holding role ..
... yes but we were not particularly good ... although I must admit - how he only got the one England cap after that scorcher he got is beyond me
The goal he scored for England was another example of his goal-poacher instincts. This is what you want from a striker. His job was to ensure the ball went into the net. Not sure about a Vardy/Heskey partnership. Vardy has yet to show he can lead the line and Heskey wouldn't score many. We'd almost be reliant on the midfield because I don't see that partnership being very successful.
Vardy is never going to 'lead the line' in that sense ... but he showed his value against Blackpool in terms of chasing down everything, making some great runs but more so in that he wil go for 'gaps' in the box that will scare defenders to death ... defence starts from the front and Vardy has demonstrated what that means .. early days yet yes ... but if his second goal at Blackburn had stood (which it should have) he would have a 50% score rate in Championship games ... I will be very surprised if he does not end up with double figures ... I like him a lot ... his hunger shines throough ..
Oh I agree 100%. And it is early days, but he does remind me a little of one Iain Hume, and we all know what happened when we relied on him and Fryatt to score the goals. I don't want to read like I'm knocking him too much...it's his first season at this level and I think he's got off to a very decent start. I just think to rely solely on him to get the goals and bench last season's top scorer would be a disaster.
