Unless he's coming mainly to advise...no. We have a strong strike force...I want to see Tadanari back. A couple of defensive free agents would have interested me more. The only positive would be that if we are not going to shore up the defence we may need to score four goals.
I don't have an issue with him signing as long as the wages aren't extortionate and he doesn't expect first team football as I think having someone who has experienced that level of success round the club can only be positive and he would be a great role model for the younger players but he's not going to be high in the pecking order and is unlikely to finish 90 minutes. Perhaps more suited to a player/coach role?
Del Piero has a whole heap of quality and bags of experience. If his wages were reasonable, I'd be all for bringing him in. He probably doesn't have the legs to see out 90 minutes, but he'd be an awesome option to have on the bench. We all saw how Scholes changed the game yesterday. I presume he is a free agent? Bringing in oldies for a final payday isn't our style, so maybe we have plans for him as a coach/scout when he stops playing.
If we were to go for him, I'd see him as our new David Connolly. Remember how many of the young players said they learnt from him being at the club? I agree, if his wages aren't ridiculous then I would be all for him signing on a short contract.
Think this is right Hoskins et al would learn bundles from just being around him. If he's cheap I think it has to be yes!
Totally agree with this Also the chance to get a Saints shirt with Del Piero on the back, yes please, sign him up.
How much can he offer us from a playing perspective? Honestly I'd say not that much. But from experience to youngsters, he'd do incredibly, and how any honest football fan could turn down the chance to see someone like Del Piero at their club in whatever capacity is beyond me.
What an accolade! One World Cup, six Scudettos, CL winner, national hero, one of Italy's all-time leading goalscorers, but who would have thought the honour to top them all may come along so late in his career - "our new David Connolly"! Not just any old player gets one of those...
Was a quality quality player but do we need him ? No probably not now , more to the point why are we not looking at centre backs ?
Strange one , it would be great to have him at Southampton . Maybe he is seen by Cortese as a replacement for Adkins , if the bad run continue's .
Just imagine Del Piero signing for a year then become a coach. How many players would be attracted to our club just for having him here.
I honestly dont know how people can say no to Del Piero. If the terms are right, amazing signing. Imagine what our youngsters would learn off of someone like that. And dont tell me he is too old. May have had a different outcome yesterday bringing on an "old head" who could manipulate the ball, Man Utd brought on a similar player, wimilar age.... what was his name... oh yeah paul scholes ! Del Piero could be amazing for us, JW Prowse education would be even better ! COYR
