"There are just one or two operational things we need to iron out." - Brenden Rodgers today.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admits he would not have allowed Andy Carroll to join West Ham if he had known he would not be able to strengthen his squad - but insists he was not misled by the club's American owners.

Rodgers, who has the option of recalling Carroll from his season long-loan in January, let the England striker leave for Upton Park as he was convinced he would bring in either Clint Dempsey or Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge on loan.

But neither deal materialised, with Liverpool's owners FSG understood to be reluctant to meet Fulham's £6m asking price for 29-year-old Dempsey.

He moved to Tottenham, leaving Rodgers short of resources and denying there were already boardroom tensions with the Americans after the 2-0 home defeat by Arsenal left them without a Premier League win.

Rodgers revealed he had been "very confident" of signing a replacement for Carroll and when asked if he would have sanctioned the move otherwise he said: "No."

Liverpool's manager confirmed he has spoken to the club's owners after the transfer window closed and will hold further talks this week, saying: "There are just one or two operational things we need to iron out."

But Rodgers - who has refused to completely dismiss the prospect of a move for former Liverpool striker Michael Owen - is conscious of the need to bolster his attacking options.

"Any player that I believe can improve the squad I will look at," Rodgers said. "We have got a very, very small squad with some very young players in it. So I can't say no."

Rodgers added: "We all know we needed reinforcements and the players needed help but it's gone now and I can't do anything about it.

"There is no point in me sitting here crying about it wishing we had or we hadn't. There is no doubt the finances here had to be changed. That is the reality. We have lost nine players and brought in three so from a business side the club has done well. What we need to do well for the future now is look after the football business and help the players here."

Asked whether the reality was different from what he was told when he was appointed, he said: "I have to be honest. I wouldn't change it for the world.

"I'm very proud and privileged to lead this club. I always knew it was going to be difficult.

"My fight is to keep the supporters proud and keep the great name of Liverpool going forward. I have made it my life to do that."

Rodgers said: "The owners have been very up front, honest and open with me. There are one or two things to iron out but they haven't misled me.

"I have spoken to the people back in America and had a couple of brief conversations. We will reflect on it again next week on the way forward and hopefully go forward in the January window."

Former Liverpool striker Owen is a free agent while Didier Drogba may also become available as uncertainty surrounds his future at Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Rodgers is not happy.

He needs to tell them that they can't win anything if they are intent on running the club on a shoe-string budget. We all wanting CL football and to win the title but just saying that isnt going to make it happen.
Man City spent half a billion and only just scrapped a title last year, not saying this is the route to go down as it isnt sustainable without Oil Barons (and even then) and we are in a better starting position than Man City were (branding etc), but its clear that if you want to win and get better you have to actually put some money in.

This.

and he also needs to point out that you cannot judge a player purely by age. Dempsey being 29 is no big deal. You have to treat each player differently. Didier Drogba for example is still going strong at 34, whilst Joe Cole struggles for fitness at 29/30(?).

If Rogers was to say he wants Owen, I feel that John Henry would say he is to old.

i think he could have fitted Carrol into his plans..the guy is a beast ,especially as a plan B.....we are in similar positions and i think the most important thing here is to back the manager...however your man has it a tad harder than ours because your owners are not backing him.

Drogba...now that would cheer me up but cant see it
Anelka..yeah could live with that
Owen...my god I'm not sure I could handle him coming back after seeing him in a manure shirt and celebrating the title with them. forget about all the other stuff that happened just that alone makes me angry. Rather put Morgan in there.

And our squad was in a worse state when BR took over, arguably.

But to be fair he would've fitted Carroll in his plans if he knew he wasn't getting a replacement for him! The problem he thought the owners were going to fund the purchase of a striker if he got Carroll and Adam off the wage budget but it ended up not working out in that way. So he's been ****ed over by the owners in that sense.

Poor fella is on the wrong end of Dalglish's ineptitude. Kenny blew the family silver and now BR has to make do with what's left.

there seems to be two opions here.

1. is rodgers is the good guy who can do no wrong

2. is rodger is a complete amateur hour guy who's out of his depth.

in the end no matter which camp you fit in its perfectly fair to say this week has been a total and utter disaster for rodgers and makes him look quite bad.

Rodgers seems like a nice guy and he's going to be shafted in the same way that Hodgson was shafted as he's not one of the "family".

God you chat some ****. Rodgers gets on with his job and takes defeats on the chin, even if they're not helped by other circumstances. Woy would blame everybody but himself, useless prick he is

Hodgson wasnt shafted. We didnt want him and not because he wasnt a Liverpool old boy (neither as Rafa but he has always been well liked by all).
Hodgson was removed cause he was dire, his play was crap, the team was at an all time low, his buys were cheapo ****, he lost two of the most important players at the time (Masca and Torres, Torres had already decided to leave before Kenny came back), he was best buds with Ferguson and his interviews was so bad and cringe worthy that it made Kenny's look brilliant. He was also unwanted as he was the last bad decision by the most hated owners ever.

Fans from other clubs need to stop with this Hodgson hero treatment and that we treated him badly. Other clubs sack managers for loads of reasons dont get this kind of **** about. Put simple Hodgson was sacked cause he was bad.

I'm not sure if he can do no wrong, every manager makes mistakes but you're right that this week has been an absolute disaster for him. That disaster (yet again) eminated from the very top.

You've been very balanced all summer in fairness mate saying you'd reserve judgement on the clubs dealings until the window closed. I remember you saying we needed to shift certain players which in fairness we've done...but I think you said you felt we needed 6 buys of quality to redress this.

There is a massive difference between Brendan Rodgers and Woy. Brendan Rodgers made a brave decision in letting Andy Carroll go out on loan, would Woy have? I don't think so. He would have plonked him on the bench, where he would be no use to anyone. It takes a brave manager to do what Brendan Rodgers did, its still 50/50 on whether it was the right decision.

If Brendans previous signings are anything to go by, then we're going to see a higher standard of player join the club, will they be the easy options as selected by Kenny. Lets be fair, Kenny did make easy, safe and functional signings with the exception of Jose Enrique and Luis Suarez.

If Brendan believes his ''Liverpool type player'' is Joe Allen and Nuri Sahin, then I'm all for him getting a long stint as manager. These two are the future of Liverpool and there is little or no debating that.

I still can't understand why Rogers did it. He almost bullied Carroll out of the Club, which is not like him - unless there is an underlying reason. Carroll is not only a big lump, but can play football as well. As a coach I would have thought that Rodgers would have got the best out of him - as he did with all players at Swansea.

The only conclusion that I can come to is that Rodgers did not want him near the squad either because he was a bad influence on the other players or had a poor attitude to what Rodgers was trying to introduce.
