I could play centre half for Barca if they just want a defender. You rarely get any defending to do. They just want someone who is going to keep the ball moving
But in the big games, the biggest, the champions league finals, the ones that matter - thats when it is important. Mascherano is solid in la liga, yet in the big euro games is a liability (ish). Put it this way, in the final would be rather take on song (solid but now quite an attacking midfielder) or like David Luiz (an actual defender who can play the ball) or a Vidic (solid)
Barca's dream defender is a younger Puyol. Someone who is equally good at passing the ball as he is sticking his head where it hurts.
