I know it's a bit late to comment on the Buttner deal, he's at United got to move on look to the future and whatnot, just that I only just signed up and people are dismissing it like it's no big deal just move on, just wanted to add my two cents...
I feel we really missed out with him. The best thing about him is his versatility, he can play literally anywhere along the left flank. If we had him in the team, we could have played him left mid against City instead of Rodriguez who clearly wasn't comfortable with that many defensive responsabilities. We would have been set defensively and going forward as we'd basically be playing two very attacking left backs, and that flank wouldn't have been an issue all game. Fox probably has a slightly better delivery but the difference is that Fox needs to be teed up to cross, Buttner can create oppurtunities from nothing and can really burn defences. Not saying he would be a definite starter ahead of Fox, but would add depth at both left-back where our only back-up is a very talented but unproven young player and down the wings where our depth is fairly non-existant.
Also the idea that we were pushed out of the transfer and that it all fell to pieces after the third party stuff and we had no chance at him, both Vitesse and Buttner came out and said that the issue was sorted and they were just waiting for our go-ahead, which never came. Think it's fairly clear (to me) Cortese pulled out purely because of the annoyance, the same thing I worry will happen with Ramirez. Not slating him before people jump on me, think he's done fantastic for us, great business sense, set the club in a great direction, just that he needs to sometimes lay up a bit on his businessman hardball tactics and just push the deals for players that will greatly improve the team.
Case in point Ramirez, seems to be that the situation is that the players wants to join us, club has set out a price, we've agreed the price but our now held up on installations, a couple more mill this year or a couple more next year and so on. I mean it could easily wind up perfectly, everyones happy, he joins, we win the premiership etc. etc., but if the deal falls through it'll be very frustrating that we keep losing out on players over fairly minor issues.
Again, before people jump on me for criticizing Cortese slightly, I still love him, not calling for his head or anything, just sometimes wish his motivations were a bit more football a bit less business!
