To be fair, you can see where he's coming from, as he's proven in the Prem, and would presumably be cheaper. Not that I agree with him.

"Just missing the official but Gaston Ramirez is considered a player of Southampton. The Uruguayan has already said goodbye to their classmates and thanked the environment. Another valuable piece goes for much less than the established 20 million: 15 million euros."

That sentence made me laugh a lot for some reason. The price of 15 million euros (11.8 million pounds) sounds a lot more reasonable, if true.

They say 2m euros a year, which is £1.57m so about £30k a week.

Here's a question - would he be able to get a work permit?

Due to his age and recent record of international appearances. Work Permit wouldn't or indeed shouldn't be an issue. I would have thought.

I'm just thinking back to the Mark Gonzalez affair of not being able to get a permit until he had 20 caps or something? But that might also have had something to do with Chile being garbage and really low (at the time) in the FIFA rankings, Uruguay are currently 4th so that wouldn't be an issue.

I think he was bought from one Spanish club, but then loaned back to a club in Spain for a season to complete two years of residency there, which I believe meant he could become a Spanish citizen. I could be wrong though.

I think he was at Real Sociedad for a bit if my memory serves me correctly.

Thats what i think. I do believe that quality does come in to it. How or who is the judge i'm not sure. You be can be sure if he was to sign for Liverpool or a "Big Club" Work permits wouldn't be an issue.

€15m sounds very plausible and respectable for a player of this standard.

    Still not sure it'll happen

    Just found this: http://www.workpermit.com/news/2005_08_30/uk/sports_stars.htm

Talks about Chile being out of the top 70 in rankings and that Liverpool could wait for them to break into the top 70. I think it links into what you're saying, jammidave, about quality of a player - maybe the thought process is you can't be that talented if you're not in the top 70?

The way I understand it, though I might be wrong, is that there is a set of boxes that must be ticked in the initial application (relating to international appearances, international team's ranking), but the team can submit an appeal even if those requirements aren't met. When considering an appeal, some sort of committee will determine what sort of a potential this player has, and if they think he looks especially good, they might grant him a permit.

This appeal process is the means by which we are getting Fierro :)

Seems so, This made me chuckle in that article - Another decision overturned this summer was that of Portsmouth striker Collins Mbesuma. The Zambian striker, incidentally brought in to replace Yakubu, saw his application rejected as his country, although ranked 62, had not figured regularly in the top 70 in the last two years.

Portsmouth were, however, able to convince the appeal board that Mbesuma was good enough to bring something to the English game and was therefore worthy of a work permit.

Who?? Wonder how much they paid him?

I remember Collins Mbesuma - he looks like 50 Cent.

Portsmouth fans from my school used to try to convince me he was going to be quality... that didn't really come off.

I thought you meant 50 cents. If only we could get a centerback who is as good as 50 cents at stopping shots
