Following the tragic news of the death of Sid 'Voice of Darts' Waddell earlier today, I thought I'd start a thread about commentators magic moments. I think we had one last night as Steve Cram summed up Mo Farah's glorious triumph in the 5k by shouting 'Beautiful' as he crossed the line and I think its fair to say Waddell himself had some unbelievably funny ones. From a Norwich point of view we had Goreham and Adams against Derby, but whats' your favourite moment from a sporting commentary? Personally loved the "He's done it" when Wilkinson kicked for World Cup glory in 2003.
One of, if not´the´classic of all time super, was Kenneth Wolstenholme at the 1966 World Cup Final, with 1 minute of extra time to go " and here comes Hurst, he´s got..................wait a minute, there are some people on the pitch, they think it´s all over, IT IS NOW!! IT´S 4!!!" Those were the days we could actually win a World Cup.
The Great Barry Davis comentating on the 1988 Olympic Mens Hockey Final... "Where were the Germans...? And to be frank.. Who cares?" David Coleman "The Kenyan athlete opens his legs and shows his class!" Great commentators and some wonderful sporting moments.
The funniest for me was non commentary really on TMS when Aggers said Botham couldn't quite get his leg over, followed by about 10 minutes of Johnners giggling and squeezing out "stop it Aggers" in a very squeaky voice! I was driving home alone from London to Lincoln, I still don't know how the hell I managed to stay on the A1 and not hit anybody! Absolute classic!
You always new what David Coleman's first words were going to be after the first goal had been scored, at the top of his voice he'd shout "one-nil!" My all time favourite commentator though was Hugh Johns as I have mentioned before on not606, he had a terrific voice. I can still remember his, "Jairzinho, one-nil !" as England went a goal down to the great Brazilians in the 1970 World Cup and "a fantastic save by Banks!" when Gordon Banks pulled off that legendary save from Pele's header in the same match. Just watched that video again and I've just realised his exact words were "Jairzinho, there it is !" , well it was forty-two years ago and I was only 8 !!
My favourite Sid Waddell one was..."William tell could take an apple off his son's head. Taylor can take a processed pea". Classic. RIP Sid Waddell.
Murray Walker had some fantastic lines, there's a website dedicated to them here. One of my favourites being: "And there's a dry line appearing in the tunnel!!" (pause while he realises what he's just said) "Obvious really as it has a roof"
can't remember the match or commentator but he screamed that brooking, if i remember correctly, has scored with his left hand foot. that would be something to see.
Boxing Commentator Harry Carpenter when Frank Bruno knocked over Mike Tyson - "He's hurt Tyson GET IN THERE FRANK!!!"
Found myself nodding and smiling at all of the above. Not sure how many Cricket fans we have on here but this is one that I remember fondly. It was one of those real 'last ball of the day' momentum shifts, and hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck stuff. There was another great piece of commentary from Richie Beanaud when we completed victory, just, the next day!
The 1987 tour de france for me An alpine stage, Delgado wins the stage, nobody knows where Irishman Stephen rouche is as he'd been dropped, but then a rider comes Out of the mist...."who is this rider, is it roche? Its Stephen Roche!!!" Brilliant for me
Ted Lowe the snooker commentator "for those of you watching in black and white, the blue is just behind the green" Classic.
