In the women's 400m hurdles first heat, a Bulgarian athlete fell over and got a DNF. Her name - no joke - Vania Stambolova.

I'm very , very angry ... I don't mind losing , but not to the ref ... it was a pitiful indirect free kick given inside the keepers box & a pitiful penalty given from that indirect free kick dilligaf !!

Go to google home page for some old school 'Daley Thompson Olympics'-style hurdles. Good old keyboard bashing.

I think there's a tendency for Brits to think that everything is hunky dory in UK sports. It's not. We've invested heavily in rowing and cycling and it's paid off. But 7% of our population is privately educated yet they provide 50% of the medals. That tells me we are still not getting enough investment at grass roots level in state schools.

We've done brilliantly again and credit to all the medalists but this country has a massive pool of untapped talent from poorer backgrounds that will never get the opportunity to succeed unless things change.

Fact is we could get even better.

exactly what the thoughts r over here atm kj, one should be realistic and are hardly able to compere with the host nation, brits are doing well but as mentioed cycling and rowing seem to be your best, as for our fortunes, they spents ****loads on old swimmers like thorpe, klim etc coming back, what a fking waste

But the facilities Down Under are fantastic, musty. Our kids would kill for them. At our local pool in Sutherland (South Sydney) there were two olympic sized pools outdoors and another one inside. Our kids learned to swim there for free.

The Institute of Sport was innovative and produced real champions. I don't think the rest of the world has caught up to Oz - it seems to me that something has changed in policy that's led to this demise. It's a bloody tragedy.

Chuffed for the way Team GB is performing though.

How much did Australia spend toward athletes this Olympics compared to how much they spent on the Sydney Olympics Musty & I think you'll find the root of the problem .

After throwing eight badminton players out of the Olympics for not trying, the IOC have been accused of double standards after allowing the entire Australian team to stay.

    Sorry Musty/Aussie, couldn't resist.

    Not sure about that.

The same distractions are there for all kids.

Seems to me that whereas I agree chucking money at it isn't the answer, targeted funding at kids from ordinary backgrounds must increase. 7% of the population shouldn't be providing 50% of the medals. Is that because of the rowing (which has been traditionally elitist)? But even people like Chris Hoy went to private school.

The privately educated kids have no more talent than other kids but they have the resources. Not their fault, and I'm not criticising them at all, but it leads you to the inevitable conclusion that if the state schools were better funded we'd do a lot better.
