Talking of American beers Schlitz rhymes with sh*tz and I agree. Anyway I was thinking the other day which is the best of the gold medals? All bronzes are good and all silvers are excellent and all golds are brilliant....agreed. But for me there's one gold which stands out as our best gold of all time anywhere in any Olympic games. You can talk about the cycling and the horses, boats and athletics and I agree but the one which stands out.....any ideas?

Pinsent + Redgrave in 1996? It was our only gold of the entire competition.

Not for me. I'll tell you,to beat the world's number one and most successful tennis player of all time for me does it. For Andy to beat Federrer like that in three sets after he'd been beaten at Wimbledon was magic. Fed said after that Andy played better.....simple. Most expected him to lose and the pressure was on and Andy won it. Best gold of all time for us.

No doubting it was a great performance yet i'm still not convinced as Murray has always looked a beaten man and second rate when facing federer in grand slams and until he wins a grand slam then there is still question marks over his ability to win the major titles.

  5. Murray? Instead of Daley Thompson, Denise Lewis or Mary Peters, any number of cyclists or rowers, even the Hockey gold from 1988????
Sorry TMT - our favourite occasional Englishman did really well, but not a patch on some others.

Boss, the fact that he hasn't won a grand slam and still beat the top man in the Olympics IS something special isn't it?

Relayer,I know what you're saying but Andy was expected to lose whereas the others were given more of a fighting chance from the start. The odds against Andy were greater than those others and to win so convincingly too.....well.

Well, its something for murray to be proud about but Tennis isn't a true Olympic sport, much like football isn't. the grand slams are what players are judged by so lets see how Murray gets on at the grand slams.

  8. But Murray HAS beaten Federer before - 4 times I think - just never in a GS. Certainly not putting a downer on what was a super performance, but this was over 3 sets not 5!!
Having said that, I think that this title will enable Murray to go on and win one of the big 4.

Jessica Ennis winning olympic gold when she was the poster girl of the games was something special, especially as she delivered under pressure.

Murray wasn't under any pressure to win as everyone expected him to get hammered!

or you have Laura Trott, double Olympic champion at the age of 20 in her first Olympic games.

My god our popular beers are crap. Budweiser, Miller: complete horsesh*t. But at least if you don't mind paying too much you can get good beers here now. I'm going to have to drink my way from one end of Europe to the other some day, not to get drunk but to enjoy the local beer and other adult beverages...

Don't know about best GB gold medal; can't even name best US gold medal. But the best Yiddish gold medal may be Aly Raisman's gold medal last night in the floor exercise to "Hava Nagelah." I was reading and looked up just as she began the first tumbling run. The whirl of motion was absolutely exhilarating, really fun to watch.

To be fair to American beer though RWAEB, a lot of the stuff that's available in the UK is ****e too, even when the same label is pretty decent elsewhere in Europe.
    No idea why.

Points taken lads but Murray had to beat Djokovich in the semis and he hammered him 2-0. He was at home in the Olympics and for me grand slam record doesn't come into it. I too think now he will go onto win one or two but for sheer Olympian kudos it's Murray for me. Coors is quite good beer.

As has been said by someone on this site before, if the pinnacle of the sport is winning an Olympic Gold, then it is rightly an Olympic event, If it is like Tennis or Football, where the pinnacle is not, then it shouldn't be an Olympic event.

Therefore, Murray's succes on Sunday is devalued. I didn't see his performance as I was at Watford, but it doesn't matter, because there is no way imo, that his achievement exceeded the likes of Lynn Davies, Mary Rand, Mary Peters, Redgrave, Ainslie, Hoy, David Hemery, etc etc.

I do agree with The Boss, there will always be reservations about Murray whilst he still has not won a Grand Slam, and for so long, he has played like a rabbit trapped in headlights when it comes to the big occasion. Good to see he didn't on Sunday, but greatest GB gold ever ?? Not for me thanks <ok>

while an Olympic gold is a great achivement,it is not the pinnacle of a lot of sports,as most sports have the world Championships which are more important to the people taking part.

Where did you learn that the world championships are more important to athletes than the Olympics tots? I've never heard that. Thanks for the feedback.

I do think the Americans are going overboard about winning gold medals.
It's very nice for their country and other nations to win a gold but the idea of the Olympic Games is to take part.
If their athletes don't have a chance of a medal ,they don't want to know them!
The other thing;when runners are lining up at the start they are concerned with their runners.Don't even mention the others.I,being English, want to know who else is running and where they are from. The same in other events.
Sorry Americans, you are so biased it's sickening....and I have watched your programmes!

    Another thing.
I was looking at the medal table.
    China 1st (much to America's disgust!),USA 2nd,G.B. 3rd.
What is the population of those three countries......and how have G.B. won so many?
