Not really 4, if we're considering Harding as possible starter then we might as well count the season over now. That'd be like saying we're considering Barnard for a starting spot up front - we're not. And not Shaw, really, he'll play here and there but he isn't in contention to start. Buttner would be competing with Fox for the starting job.

Unless it's a big name like Adam Johnson... hell I count Jay Rodriguez as a big enough name, I'm ridiculously happy we signed him.

It could have helped if NA had maybe played Falque for a couple of games last season, i fear that our chance of re-loaning him to cover Lallana at LM has kind of been lost by the fact that they loaned us a player and we never played him. He was obviously a useful player

Yeah thats the kind of player I would consider a big name. And Rodriguez is unproven, but hopefully he will be a big name this time next year :D

Surprised at this viewpoint. It seems common for some to dismiss achievements in the championship very quickly.
We were the top scorers in the championship and only failed to score in a handful of matches. We have already improved on this position and I'm personally very positive about our attacking options.

Adam Johnson turned down a move to Stoke last year (allegedly) so why would he come to us? I know we aren't Stoke in many ways, but come on. It doesn't disguise the fact we've still only just come up.

I am too. But there is an element of risk with fielding 4 strikers with 0 premier league experience, one of which has only a couple of games experience of england football, and one is only 22..

The experience Owen would bring to the team would be invaluable. Hes got years of premier league experience, and has proven himself as a prolific premier league goal scorer. Not even mentioning the confidence it would bring to the team, and the influence he would have on the youngsters, especially Rodriguez, who is a younger version of him.

Its irrelevent though because i doubt we would pay his wages.

Adam Johnson is a good player, no doubt.

But he is money motivated and does not fit in and wouldn't fit in as a 'squad player'.

We've seen him moan before and he would only evoke a disruptive influence, in my opinion.

As I see our team at the moment (assuming Buttner signs)...

    GK: Davis
    RB: Richardson
    CB: Hooiveld
    CB: Fonte
    LB: Fox
    RM: Guly
    CM: Cork
    CM: Schneiderlin
    LM: Lallana
    ST: Lambert
    ST: Rodriguez

    with a second 11 of

    GK: Forecast
    RB: Butterfield
    CB: Seaborne
    CB: Stephens
    LB: Buttner/Harding
    RM: De Ridder
    CM: Hammond
    CM: Ward-Prowse
    LM: Buttner/Puncheon
    ST: Sharp
    ST: Lee

Shows the areas of importance, to me, are GK, RB, CB, RM and probably CM. Another striker would be too many, definitely.

If, and I'm doubtful they will, but IF the Butland and Davis rumours come off that leaves us with only CB, RB and RM until I'm very confident.

There is no chance of us signing Michael Owen, and that makes me very happy.

Yes he was once good, and has a knack for goals, but hasn't put a run of games together for a long time. I'm not even sure signing someone like him would inspire the team - our squad have worked hard to reach the Premier League and more than anything Nigel knows we need the right, motivated character's to come in. 'Been there, done that'
players don't seem to be part of the plan, as well as the fact we have enough strikers to not be looking at more.

This is interesting - our first eleven looks competitive, but our second eleven looks terrible. Hopefully this will be addressed in the next few weeks, I'm just surprised we haven't shipped too many out yet so may be a busy month or so

Personally i cant see that first 11 surviving. The defence is weak. The 2nd 11 might aswell not turn up...

It remains to be seen how Hooiveld and Fonte adapt to the Premier League but I don't think we can afford to take that risk, a new CB is pretty damn important.

I was gonna leave the second CB spot until I thought of Stephens just before posting... only 2 established CBs, then one who hasn't played first team football in almost a year, then a kid... not exactly gonna make the attack forces of the Premier League tremble.

What a stupid comment once again from RLGB.

You wouldn't want him because he is money driven? What a weirdo.

He wouldn't fit in as a squad player because he would play in first XI without breaking a sweat.

SSN reporting that Spurs are preparing a £7m bid for Butland.
I would suggest that this is the end of our chances of signing him if true. The lure of London, a bigger pay packet and a bigger club!
Not only that but I think the figures quoted to buy this very young man are getting stupid

Adam Johnson - not so ridiculous an idea. We could do a deal on loan with a view to permanent next year. Wages may not be problem as heck, Spurs had Adebyor all last season and city paid most his wages. City would probably prefer to loan Johnson to saints than to spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool etc. He would play every week and if we do surprise peeiple he may decide to stay.

Butland - it would be harder to get him if a Spurs were in for him but still we must be attractive for an 18 year old keeper as first team action could be sooner

Metro is linking us with Jermaine Jenas. Was going to be a top player but not sure he's lived up to his billing. Not convinced he'd be a good signing. Views?
