NC doesn't like Negotiations to be open.. So this does indeed signal a possible bid agreed.

I love the idea of us signing Butland, but I can't help but feel apprehensive about spending so much on him. It's clear he's a young lad with a lot of talent and he obviously has the potential to be a top top keeper, but weren't we told the same thing when we signed Tommy Forecast?

Just to put it into perspective, City signed Hart for £600,000 from Shrewsbury and we're supposedly willing to spend 10x that on JB. Am I the only one who finds that slightly worrying <yikes>

Scott Brown is a real enforcer. He's fallen out of favour with some of the Celtic fans due to a couple of injury hit seasons but he would really add some steel. That said, he would probably add some booking related suspensions too but he could definitely provide a platform and has a great engine.

The £6m could be £2m up front, then £2m on so many games and £2m on full england cap. If those second things happen, then he'll be worth the money. If they don't happen, we won't be paying.

Very few deals are 100% up front these days (Rodriguez wasn't) especially for young unproven players. Your figures will probably be about right, FLT.

Cant see how he is worth 6 million. Sounds like a prospect but thats a bit ott. Rodriguez was 7mil and he is established at Championship level obviously Butland is younger but not by much. But in truth i will trust NA and NC

It's not REALLY £6m though. The fee for Walcott was quoted at £12m but that was only £5m up front, this will be much similar.

City certainly got a good deal, but as has been said already, it won't be £6m up front. If he turns into a world-beater, we'll end up paying more, but if not we won't be spending more than £3m.

And he's absolutely not in the Forecast category! We've actually had a look at him for a start...

Forecast hadn't represented England at any level whatsoever. Butland has represented his country at every level from U16 to U21. That's a pretty decent indicator.

even at 6 mil, if everything goes wrong he will still have a high re-sale price. unless he turns out to a crock of shyte obviously. i see it as low risk for a very good prospect that can offer 15 years of service, and keepers tend to stay at clubs longer

Another thing to add is that his price has obviously gone up due to his inclusion in euros. Now he is tipped to be number one in the Olympic squad and if he plays well in that then it will only drive the price up even more. If we are going to sign him for a realistic price then it has to be done before the olympics.

I understand that, but take Joe Lewis for example. It wasn't that long ago that he was tipped to be an England #1 and all the big clubs were circling. He represented England at U15, U16, U17, U18, U19 AND U21 level but yet a few years down the line and a couple of howlers later we see him become Posh's second choice keeper behind Paul Jones (Whose now signed for Crawley Town) and then he was actually released earlier on this month.

All I'm saying is it's very hard to judge a keeper at such a young age with so little experience - a major part of actually being a goalkeeper is mental strength and how they're able to cope with making mistakes and the responsibilities that they have.

And then look at Joe Hart. Lewis stayed in lower levels which stunted his development, Hart climbed to the top and excelled. It's a good move for both us and Butland to pick him up, no signing is 100% guaranteed.

Wojciech Szczęsny is another good example, granted he was already at Arsenal, and was regarded as a good prospect, but he had a season on loan at Brentford in League 1, and within a year he was Arsenal's first choice keeper, playing Champions League football. Sort of similar to Joe Hart.

Agreed. If he plays for GB and does well, Birmingham wil quite rightly hold out for more. And potentially, the interest in Butland wouldf only increase ever more.

If we were to sign him I hope its before the Olympics, because you know his 'value' will probably go up even more if he has a good tournament...
