Oh, you mean as manager of Sunderland tomorrow morning. (Trying to find some humour in the situation.) Martin O'Neill.
I think you should still have bruce in the poll, out of those Van Gael, you never know we could win our next 6 games, get 57 points and finish 7th or so (unlikely but possible). I just think there is something amiss with O`Neill, what exactly has he done, got leicester the the coca cola cup final (even steve mclaren got to the uafa final, and there is another name for you, if it wasnt for his England Debacle, no one would be shying away from him, he did learn from one of the best after all SAF). toon 1-0 down, not sure i want that or not atm though, bloody hate football some days lol
With you on O'Neill, i just don't get the clamour for him everytime we are debating managers. We should be aiming higher, answer this, why have NONE of the big clubs offered MON a job, at any point?
Well Leeds did seemingly, when they were classed as "big", Man U couldnt, Arsenal couldnt as they have had the same managers for the past 15-25 years or so, i think the jobs just havnt been available, he did manage Celtic, but again not sure what to make of the scottish league. There is still something about him, would he take us to the next level, probably, would he spend a fortune in doing so, probably, would ellis short support that, not a clue, but then you have this new silly rule coming in on spending, we can only spend what we make, so why on earth did we get bloody tombola as a sponser, what are we going to get, blue rinsed 80 year olds buying our merchandise ffs (we should have had Nissan years ago).
If we happy just to survive in this division (and that's what we seem to be destined for yet again), we should have given the job to Allardyce in the first place. None of this "next level, shopping at Harrods" Steve Bruce nonsense. Just battling away in lower mid-table. No relegation fears. Uncompromising football. Modest expectations. If the days of big spending are over (from our financial results they might be) and we accept we'll never be a top 6 club, Sam's the man. In short, I'd rather we be a mid table club under Allardyce than a mid table club under Bruce, if that makes sense. With Allardyce we know what we're going to get. With Bruce, things can go from one extreme (3-0 away to Chelsea and excellent football) to the other (winless runs lasting months and dreadful performances) very quickly, and I certainly don't like that.
Have you heard the phrase about changing horses in midstream , you fall off, so wait until the season finishes
After yesterday? Bruce even enters the question?? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm utterly, utterly shocked that that **** is even considered an option. How could you possibly watch yesterday and even think it?
Surely all this is theoretical, I mean, we're saying who we'd want, but deep down we all know that Bruce is pretty much guaranteed another season if we stay up, nothing is going to change now anyway. But hey, that'll never stop us talking about it. And just to clarify my (lone haha) Allardyce vote, I have doubts as to how willing the club is to spend vast sums on transfers in future. Bearing that in mind, I wonder if the likes of O'Neill and Van Gaal would take the job if they weren't guaranteed large sums to spend, which they'd certainly be offered elsewhere, especially in the case of the latter. I'd love managers of their caliber at our club, but hand on heart, considering how budget conscious our club is becoming (not a bad thing really), I don't think they're realistic possibilities.
I don't agree. I don't want this club to be a mediocre club for the rest of its existence, I think we should most certainly be aiming for the pointy end of the table. I don't know who should be manager, but I've enjoyed this last season, including the barren run. I know supporters of teams like Stoke and Blackburn. I don't want Sunderland to be like them, I want an interesting club.
Buy these remarks Ballin you saying no cash so in future we will be lucky to be mid table, well if that's the case Quinny will be gone, as i read it he wanted us to get behind the team stop the pub and bums on seats, does he think he will get any supporters other than armchair with this debacle, i have been there through good and bad times, but for fs we have everything in place but the guy to take us forward, 14 games of **** last season, 9 this, cant see a crowd above 10 to watch dross, if we loos the next one SOL will lock like a ghost town on MOTD.
The basis of my Allardyce vote is that there's a chance he can re-create what he did at Bolton. And, if we decide to, we can build from there and go for the caliber of managers we're mentioning. It seems, to me at least, that there's a step between where we are now and the position where we can take our pick from the likes of Moyes, Jol, Van Gaal and O'Neill, and I think Allardyce is the man to guarantee Premier League status year in year out and make us a solid club. A few years under Allardyce, shrewd spending, drama - free and unspectacular but respectable league placings, THEN we can plot our next move. After all, wasn't Steve Bruce brought in partly due to his reputation as a shrewd wheeler dealer? I'd think so. If there's anything we've learnt over the past two seasons, it's that Bruce isn't the man to deliver cup runs, trips to Wembley and European football. So why was he given the job? Maybe just to wheel and deal and trim the squad with a low net spend. Might as well get Allardyce then, better manager than Bruce anyway.
But the thing is, we've GOT the base to work up from. Yes, we might need a proper LB and a couple of more creative midfielders, but if players like Muntari and Sess play to their full potential, that we've seen before, we've got a good team already. There's no point in bringing in a new manager for a few signings, and also I find Big Sam a bit of a prick
I pick Steve Bruce Yes we have had a bad run but all this talk of him going is way over the top If we get a result against Birmingham next weekend then get back to winning ways the week after everything will be nice and rosey again.
K---E---E---G---A---N ! (Hey guys, I try to be serious most times, so please allow me this one. Can you just imagine the faces up the road? I mean, aha, ha, ha, ah, aha, ha, ha, aha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,ha I would just love it, just love it, wouldn't you? Aaaaaaaargh, ha, ha, ha, ha ........Keegan!).
haha, I don't mind Big Sam, felt sorry when the Mags gave him the boot. However, take away our loan signings and the squad isn't very pretty. There's a great deal of work to be done, we agree that Bruce isn't the man to do it. I just think Allardyce can cement our position. As supporters, we look at our magnificent club and marvel at our stadium, facilities and history. But the truth is, we're not very big or important. As things stand, I doubt O'Neill, Van Gaal and Jol are falling over themselves to send their CVs TBH, but Big Sam was practically begging for the job when it was last available. He wanted to come here, might be a bit stung due to the initial snub but he's a step up IMO.
