The article I read said he was thrown out before being smacked so he was hardly minding his own business

Here's a bit of an update, on a really, really nice guy:

Footballer Joey Barton: I Got Sucker Punched

Footballer Joey Barton has said he will not press charges after he was punched outside a nightclub.
The controversial Premier League star, who plays midfield for QPR, was reportedly involved in a fight with two men near Garlands nightclub in Liverpool city centre.
He has played down the incident on his Twitter account , insisting he suffered nothing more than a small bruise.
"I got sucker punched in the back of the head. Not injured as reported just a small bruise on rear of head/ear," he wrote.
"I've had worse. Life goes on! Thanks for the concern. Have a good day people.
"Not planning on pressing charges as it's not that serious, the police have also got better things to do with their time."
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "Merseyside Police were called to Eberle Street in Liverpool city centre at 5.30am... following reports of an altercation.
"On arrival, officers found a 29-year-old man who had sustained injuries to his face. The man left the scene voluntarily.
"Two 21-year-old men from the L13 area were arrested at the scene for a public order offence. They are currently in police custody."
A picture, apparently showing a shirtless Barton being held back by police and a woman, appeared on Twitter.
Barton has been involved in incidents both on and off the pitch and has been convicted twice on charges of violence.
The footballer was given a 12-match ban and fined £75,000 after being sent off on the final day of the season for elbowing Carlos Tevez in the face in a game against Manchester City.
Immediately after the sending off, Barton kicked Sergio Aguero in the back of the knee and tried to headbutt Vincent Kompany.
When Barton played for Manchester City he was fined £60,000 for stubbing out a lit cigar in a fellow player's eye during a Christmas party.
He was sold by the club after putting his teammate Ousmane Dabo in hospital after attacking him at Manchester City's training ground in 2007, for which he received a four-month suspended sentence for assault.
He served 77 days of a six-month sentence for common assault and affray in 2008 for an incident in Liverpool city centre in which he punched a man repeatedly until the man lost consciousness.
He then attacked a 16-year-old, leaving the teenager with broken teeth.

I would consider the situation. If somebody attacked me for no reason but caused very little damage I might want to forget about it especially with the sentences people get nowadays.

Well I for one am feeling a sense of satisfaction with it. Have you seen the footage of what he was jailed for? He broke that bloke's jaw for no other reason than he was walking down the street. What goes around and all that.

He walked off because like any bully he realized he was going to get beaten clueless. Not because he was innocent in all this. In most cases it takes two but with Joey he'd start a fight with himself.

I bow to your obvious inside knowledge of the events and Bartons motivations that night and the capabilities of the two attackers. <ok>

If you are attacked and defend yourself or threaten violence to defend yourself, you can be charged with affray.

I can't believe it looks like I'm defending Barton, he may well be guilty, he may even have started it, but to make the claims some are on here based on very little fact, is simple, small minded prejudice.

I thought we were better than that, given the ignorant, ill-informed **** kicking we get as a region from what are laughing called "the media".

I also believe in karma but its simply true that the sort of people that attacked him, are just like him, and will have done this before, and will do it again. Just like him, so I'm sorry but congratulating them on assaulting him, for whatever reason, simply condones Barton s own actions in the past.

You can't just pick and choose which victim or aggressor you feel sorry for based on irrational hatred/dislike of someone. They're all scum, anyone who attacks anyone else should be locked up for a good period of time regardless of who they are.

Agree Madhog. What some seem to be suggesting is that it's open season on tossers.

If that mob rule mentality were allowed, there's quite a few people that could never leave their house.

I'm not giving Barton any benefit of the doubt as he is a proven twat, I don't know for sure obviously but am guessing that he might have contributed a bit to getting his head kicked in, no sympathy at all for him

Playing devil's advocate, what if, for example, the guy who punched Barton here is mates with the guy who had his jaw broken by Barton when he got sent down? They both happened in Liverpool afterall. Put yourself in their shoes, would you try and get some kind of revenge in an 'eye for an eye' kind of way? Cos I know I would if my mate had his life ruined by someone in a cowardly attack when he was minding his own business.

Bummy, honest answer? No. The law dealt with it. By steaming in for revenge I would 1) make myself as much of a scum bag as him in the first place and 2) would end up paying the price for that act, like he did.

Sounds like you're suggesting the best way to deal with violence and anti social behavior is by being violent and anti social (in a devils advocate manner).

Im not religious in any way but I believe to an extent in an eye for an eye and all that. Basically, Im on the side that Barton's had it coming - what goes around etc etc - and Ive got zero sympathy. Yes that makes me wrong in the eyes of the law but that's what I believe.
