True, to say he alone was a massive threat is stretching the truth a little, but you cannot deny that his insistence that there was only one God went against their beliefs. As support for him grew, it undermined their authority, especially as ancient empires such as that had their foundations based largely in the faith of their citizens. If any of these individuals or groups should oppose a government that denied them their individual beliefs, especially as that belief gained widespread support, the potential for conflict grows.

John the Baptist was the biggest dog in the park. He was the primary focus. It stayed that way even in christian communities for quite a while. its why paul had to write two letters to those dumb corinthians. they didn't get what he meant the first time. they didn't know whether to throw their lot in with the J-man or dunkin john.

JTB took all the heat as far as propaganda went.

I just don't see why you would then seek to use the crucifixion account, the biggest miracle/trick of the lot as evidence of his non existence. Either you don't accept the accounts of the miracles, or you do.

Saying that the Romans crucified people has nothing to do with me accepting Jesus.

My point wasn't solely about Jesus' crucifixion - I said that IF the Romans had records of him, one of the most likely to exist would be that of his crucifixion, as they were meticulous in their recording of the crucifixion of OTHERS.

Edit: And yes, I understand that this is based on the assumption that he both lived and was crucified!

I didn't mean accepting Jesus as...you know. becoming born again or anything.
The passion is the account of a miracle. if you don't accept his miracles, then you don't accept this account. You then can't cite it as an example of him not existing in any way shape or form.

What a splendid thread.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
I have to say the more I check this site out, the more I like it.
Of course the only downside is it is open 24 hours and that means that I will inevitably be posting at some point whilst drunk and very probably disorderly.
The only spirits I believe in tend to make me talk in tongues.

to whomever posted this to me:

"Why do you persist in believing these scriptures that you readily refer too? You are making yourself out to be a fool, with these inane ramblings and childish name-calling that has became your hallmark of late, just stop it, it's ridiculous. Cock"

I suggest you learn to read you gutless pussy.

Well if God does exist, I don't think he's a particularly friendly God. In Norse mythology, the Gods were capricious, selfish and often sadistic. People were merely instruments for their pleasure and amusement. And their subjects/believers eg the Vikings, were under no illusion otherwise. I'd say this view of God (if he/she exists) is more realistic than that of a benign, loving deity.

<ok>

Tell me this all you who are defending Religion and the proof that Jesus existed - will the 80% of people on Earth who are not Christians go to hell?

I can answer that Mick. But I have been accused of being a fundamentalist without even speaking about what i actually believe. imagine what it would be like if I actually did.
