downing in - adam johnson only standby - can someone explain this to me cos i,m at a total loss .................

The only reason I can justify this is that Downing has been quite good for England in recent games, even if he has been very poor for Liverpool.

There is no real justification for picking Downing. He's been terrible this year and unlike Caroll hasn't experienced an upturn in form the last month either.

Well, not scoring is surely a good thing from an England POV. It's not as if we want to win a tournament is it? Other than Gerrard, none of the Liverpool players in the squad should be there I'm afraid

I completely agree Downing is awful, for England and Liverpool. Ive never rated him nor have I never understood why managers pick him.

I don't think I've ever watched a game were I've felt he's played well. Every game he just gives away the ball, and he has no end product whatsoever, he's like a carbon copy of Wright Phillips, but left footed.*

I'd have Adam Jhonson or even Joe Cole over him all day long:biggrin:*

Baffled to see Roy pick Downing. Not 1 goal or assist scored for Liverpool in the league and he gets picked.

Honestly did think Roy was the right man, but starting to doubt this after some bizarre player selections today.

My initial reaction was that Chamberlain was the worst decision with just 5 Premier League starts. Whilst I still don't agree with the choice, the bigger mistakes are without doubt Downing and Carroll. They've failed to link up to any great effect all season and given that Downing's main strength is supposed to be quality of deliveries and Carroll is supposed to be a bullish target man we've taken not one but two proven failiures who we know don't link up well together. Downing's a fringe England player, who has never cemented a regular starting place in his numerous chances and is on the back of a bad season - he shouldn't have even been in consideration for a place. As the joint 61st highest goalscorer in the Premier League, he can't be relied upon for goals and hasn't really created any either - Heskey is NOT a player that needed replacing quite so directly <yikes>
