I can refer you to this, which I posted on another thread, Many are forgetting the excellent seasons Downinng had at Boro and Villa that got him into the England setup in the first place. Once he's done enough to break into the squad, the fairest way to judge him is by what he does in an England shirt and not in a horribly underperforming club side. For England jhe's done alright and I don't begrudge him a place.
You were wrong on the other thread as well. Downing as never ever been International class. He's always been an average to good Premier League player. Apart from this season, when he's been ****e. Taking an average player in poor form is ridiculous.
