4-4-3?

I can really only speak for Premier League era. Before then I went to a few games but my favourite players were Lee Clark and David Kelly!

I like this team! Maybe replace Beye with Steve Watson, and Batty with Andy Cole (switch to 4-4-2). Great choices though. Anyone that doesn't have Beardsley has to take a long hard look at themselves ;-)

I just think a lot of people's judgement on Habib Beye is clouded by the circumstances he left us in. For me, he was our best player (along with Bassong) in the year we were relegated. He was the wrong side of 30 and Villa back then were an upwardly mobile club with a good manager. I can't really blame him for seeking football back in the Premier League. I also don't think he sulked about getting a move, it's just that he was one of our saleable assets so we sold him.

As far as I'm concerned, he was a great player for us. Strong, tall, athletic, good pace, read the game well and got forward and supported the wingers. I liked Steve Watson but the fact is there was never really a time when he was our first choice right back. It was always Warren Barton really and I always think he let us down defensively a lot as he was so gung-ho in getting forward.

I decided against going for 2 up top because none of the great sides these days do it. If I was able to cherry pick every single player at their prime for us and put them in a team now, this is how I would line them up. Batty, for me deserves to be selected as he was a great little passer but gritty as well and liked to put the boot in. Every team needs a David Batty.

I may however, consider replacing Kieron Dyer on the bench with Gary Speed.

Ah yeah I definitely had time for habib beye, pacey and good cross on him, not really bothered about how he left the club, he was getting old and probably didn't have time in his career to risk a championship season (though it didn't work out for him in the end anyway). But the line "one of our best players from our relegation season" pretty much underlines why I wouldn't have him in. I think Colo is the only player from the current squad I'd have in, and that lot finished 5th, so standard was much lower in 2008.

I have to say I have always had a soft spot for John Beresford. Lived just down the road from me in Durham, Top Lad!! And he could play a bit as well!

Yeah but a right-back has never single-handedly kept a club up. The season we got relegated, we went down having conceded 59 goals. This season we have conceded 51 and finished 5th. Only 8 goals in it. The problem we had the year we got relegated was scoring goals. We had a back 4 of Beye, Bassong, Colo and Enrique. That's not too bad.

Given

Barton/Saylor Colo Albert Enrique

Ginola Lee Dyer Robert

Shearer Cole

Subs:
Krul Barton/Saylor Watson Speed Ben Arfa/Solano Ferdinand Beardsley

WBarton was a right back by trade whereas Saylor is a better player imo but can do a job at RB. Dyer in his prime was really something special to be honest.. Ben Arfa has only had half a solid season, so its 50/50 between him and Nobby..
