Arrived at Sunderland in January 2011, Stéphane Sessegnon (28 years) might not stay there very long, despite a contract that runs until 2014. Reportedly, the former Parisian would have caught the eye of Arsenal where Arsene Wenger would like to make it his rookie lighthouse in the offseason.
But bought for 7 million euros (1 million bonus) PSG, the Benin international midfielder is worth much more today after a very successful season with the Black Cats (7 goals in particular). Its leaders would claim indeed the $ 22 million for agreeing to part with it.

I was actually in the 20m and sell him camp but listening to your argument and you have changed my mind.

you can't replace him but you could by players who would share his workload which would be better for the team it will also mean your not as reliant on him in the future especially as you could be buying quality young players like Hoilett and others like that.

He's on a free mate and im a realist, I think he will go to a bigger club than Sunderland. Having been informed Sess is the 2nd top player in the league for creating chances, that is an outstanding achievement when you look at some of the top clubs and players. To sell our best player yet again would be suicide.

Just speculation anyway. All the signs are O'Neill wants to retain him. If there is money to spend in his first real transfer window, they make a couple of quality signings early doors, he might choose to stay and see how things turn out. He is 27-28 and he'll have a decision to make. Go for one last shot at the big clubs or stay put. He is enjoying his football and has had a slow journey to the top, maybe he'll prefer to stay put. Money is the problem of course but he'll be doing alright at Sunderland anyway. Signing a new contract with them would send out a great message for the transfer market/pre season.

On the flip side, he's of an age when our offer of a first XI place could get us the deal.

We are a club with massive potential, and a massive step up from Blackburn (support, facilities, manager etc), I think he might fancy the move.

I'm not confident we'll get him, but I absolutely believe we have a shot, the fans would love him here, having him and Jimmy Mc would almost be a throwback to Magic & Summerbee, great days, but with the class of Sess in the middle.

Are we less likely to sign Hoillett than we were to bring in O'Shea & Wes from United after all those trophy-laden years?

I've said this a few times now but for £20m I'd definately sell him (Sess) and also Gyan (6m). With the £26m + £10m from other sales, I'd rebuild the team with £36m over the summer. There could be more if Ellis decides to dip his hand in too.

Sess is a great little player but I dont know where he should play. He isnt specialist at any position and for me I'd sooner have a specialist winger; playmaker and 2 proper strikers.

It wont be a majority view for sure but I am convinced that Sess is now the problem rather than the solution to our revival, as constantly playing him as a striker is actually preventing us from scoring enough goals and he drifts to many times if he was in midfield.

We are almost entirely reliant on him to create and score and he doesnt do enough of either IMO.

Just what do you think the £6m from any Gyan deal will actually buy us then?

I see the point of what you are saying, but theat will be offset by 2 strikers in the summer.

Sess workrate is incredible as well, not to be underestimated, who expects a 5ft 6 flair player snapping at their heels and staying on his feet whilst bullied?

We could take Hoillett & Yakubu on frees, and instantly be streets ahead of this season, yes, Hoillett would command a large signing on fee, but his wage would be offset largely by Flash's departure (or reduced terms).

Fletcher, who we all seem happy to be linked with, and seems a very likely target, can be snapped up for the Gyan money, and i'd wager he's not on mega-bucks at Wolves.


Interesting that Catts is moving into his final year, is it a good time to consider a sale?

We'd see around £6million for him, we have Colback & Meyler, and we could potentially look at someone like Jamie O'Hara, who is a smashing player.

I guess my point here is, we simply don't NEED to sell Sess, if we get our heads out of the clouds, and remember we are Sunderland and not Man City, the unglamourous names above, well, they'd massively improve the side, in terms of balance and dynamic.

Sess could be released in a free role behind 2 strikers.

I was in the same mind frame but when you see he has created the 2nd most chances in the league then for me that defeats the argument of not creating enough and he has scored about 8 this season, so that's nearly double figures in a season that has been all over the shops at time.
