He's 6ft 1 and very very adept in the air as well as being pacey. Can you stop with that emotion just because people have differing views to you? It comes across incredibly condescending.

Problem is, Newcastle are after him too. And that's a good sign as well as bad, as Alan Pardew has exceptional taste in strikers. And actually, in the transfer market, he barely puts a foot wrong.

I'm probably wrong, but do we need another striker?

This guy is the modern day Lambert, he has pace, height, strength and most importantly scores goals. He was only crap against us due to his team being bloody awful, they must be the most inconsistent club in the league. Plus he will fit in well having played with Cork and Fox. I think we need to look for young hungry players who want to achieve at the highest level, it's worked for both Norwich and Swansea. QPR went for experience in the form of Cisse but his attitude is poor and the way it's going it could cost them.

Firstly, let's just get the 'P' next to are name!!

Love the idea of J.Rod, but surely Lambert, Sharp, Lee, Guly, Barnard, Conolly (if he has another year left on him), as well as young strikers coming through i.e. Hoskins, Sinclair and the new lad Gallagher, are more than enough?

Old..? We know he's quick, but doesn't grow older faster, as far as I know. Jonno's only 25. ;)

barnard and connoly will be released in the summer. they are 5 and 6 in the pecking order without any of the kids coming through, so using guly as a utility player there is room for j.rod- hopefully he may be half the price of before

He should be No1 on the shopping list. I would welcome J Rod to Saints as has been mentioned he's young, quick, good in the air, scores goals and a technically gifted footballer. Could well be the Lambert of the future for us. He's a Burnley lad though so would take a lot to pull him away, but they don't look like their going anywhere fast. He surely wouldn't get game time at Newcastle would he? Always nice to have options !

Barnard signed a new deal just before he got injured again. I doubt he'll be playing much though unless he has a really storming pre-season. Jay Rod would be a very astute signing as he's an all round player who is good in the air and strong on the ball as well as a runner and a goalscorer.

Rather have this young fella eager to prove himself than some tired and failed premiership experienced striker like some have been quoting on here!

All we know is that we know nothing. Nicola and Nigel will find someone we've never heard of or thought of. I think their work begins in earnest when the season finishes. Last summer, Nigel went on holiday with Nicola whilst the team were in Los Vegas...do managers ever get a real break?

When we go up I would say say

Connolly is gunna be released, Guly isn't a ST in my book

Barnard will probably be moved on in the summer (as much as i hate to say it cos I love the guy)

so that leaves us with Lambo, Lee (who is injured till Sept anyway) and Sharp

I like Jay Rod but he's not exactly set the world alight in the championship. There are lots of strikers like him in the premiership that score the odd goal and then go quiet for months (Reminds me if Beckford). He does have potential but he's not really shown any more than that, plus we have some of our own youngsters to try and push in through.

I'd love to see us go for a proven prem striker to compliment what we have. Someone like Defoe or Robbie Keane. I know either of these won't be everyones choice for a variety of reasons but I think that's what we need to adapt quicker.

He's something like the 4th top scorer in the league? Above Sharp...

Jay Rod has actually turned into a more frequent goalscorer, 20 odd goals is a good return. I remember in the summer people were not sure about him and whether he would cut it, especially with his high transfer fee that was banded around. I think he would be worth it and has the ability to play in the PL.

I am a big admirer of Jay Rodriguez and all the posts have some valid points. My view is that we do need a player that can be a target man and hold the ball and the Blackpool game proved that Lambert is the only who can do that. Rodriguez does seem to be capable of that but my other point is that we do need a striker with premier league experience and i know people say Nige isn't gonna go for a big time charlie but i still think that he will go for a slightly older player with experience if the price is right and it could turn out that they might be cheaper than Rodriguez. The kind of player i am thinking of is Kevin Davies, he has premier league experience, he can hold the ball up and he will chip in with goals. I know people might say he has past it but for 2 seasons he might be what we need to cement out place in the PL.

That is of course IF we go up

I'm not getting your point to be honest. Jay has 21 goals this season and is only 22 years old. Secondly, how do you know there are many like him in the Premier League that go quiet and score the odd goal when he has never played there? Beckford is 28 and played in the Football League until 2010 and he didn't represent England at any level. Beckford's career has been different to Jay's, as he was 'discovered' far later than Rodriguez.

And on the not shown more than his potential point, how can you show more than your potential, because your potential is the capabilities that it is possible to be, and he can't be his potential, or that would become his ability. He scored 15 last season, and 21 this one so far. He's improving as he gets more regular football. He was selected for the England U21's so is clearly regarded well, but as he only started getting regular starts at the age of 20/21 he didn't get as many caps as he could've done. It's very hard to get anywhere near the England squad without being in the Premier League, I'd argue some of the players in the squads are less deserving than those who can't seem to get into it.

On a recent article about Rodriguez it was noted that he was interesting and being scouted by Southampton, Everton, Newcastle and Fulham. A comment from a Burnley fan read: "No surprise really. JRod is a fantastic footballer. I think the only reason we have kept him so far is the fact he is a local boy."

I don't really see what you're getting at at all. Yes Beckford scored a fair bit and hasn't been the same in the Premier League, but he did so in his later 20's, not as a young guy (at 22 Rodriguez is) who can still learn and adapt his game. Jay has the potential and if he is available in the Summer for a good price I would take him for sure0. I think our coaching staff would be able to help him make the step up if required, but I think he would do a good job for us. I'd rather sign Jay Rodriguez than what will soon be a 32 year old Robbie Keane getting megabucks in the USA who would only come if it was a big pay day, whilst Defoe would never join Southampton, as if he opted to leave Spurs there would be several stronger suitors if we are being honest.

Not having a go, just wanted to put across a reasoned counter-argument.

Jay Rod was my pick in the HCDAJFU thread during the summer and nothing has changed apart from him "doing an even better job for us now"....To my mind, he is an all round striker in the mould of Alan Shearer and has become a better finisher this season. I would be very happy if he signed for us in the summer.
