When it comes to Europe, we might only be in that once, so I'd rather get as far as possible against some rather exotic teams just to get our profile up, even if it does hurt when we eventually get booted out.

The cups come around every year without fail, the same old stuff. Before we know it both sides will be giving it another go again.

Neither of us have won anything at all for 4 decades, FA Cup has lost a lot of its romance, but i would love to win the thing, even cup runs get the whole place buzzing.

The chances of either of us winning the league is slim to 0 for the next 10 years, it may happen but i doubt it. so whats next the FA Cup, at this moment in time, with our history i would rather win the FA CUP and come 17th than finish 2nd in the league.

Once we win the FA cup, then thats the time to think about the league for me, whats the point of finishing 5th in the league, you still havnt won **** all, and coming 2nd-4th for a few years didnt do the toon many favours.

Bottom line = I just want a trophy before its too bloody late, last time we won one I was 1 yr old, so cant remember a bloody thing about it.

In fairness I dont see how any manager can be blamed for a tactical blunder because a player he subbed on scored an OG however hilarously bewilderingly strange the OG was. How can you possibly account for the possibility of an OG when you are formulating tactics?

The bit in bold <ok> But my main point with the FA Cup is, I would rather go out in the 3rd round than get knocked out in the semi final. If you don't make the final it's just a waste of effort. Also, I disagree that finishing 5th means **** all. European nights are what being a fan is all about, those games are special.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. The tactical blunder is the fact that he subbed a CB for a centre midfielder and then moved Bardsley out of position to CB (if I've read correctly).

Mentioning the OG is just piss taking.

So is winning the FA cup, its all hindsight anyway from your POV, the chances of winning the FA CUP are slim, but not as slim as winning the PL, you wont know you have won it till you win it, but if i could tell the future and knew we would have got beat in the 1/4 final, i would have been shouting for peterborough in the 3rd round. Every fan thinks they can get far, and when you are a PL top 10 club which hopefully both of us are, we should be looking and believing we can win it. Its not impossible.

btw even the bloody coca cola cup would do.

    tactical blunder...................

we considered one goal with the starting 11 in place thanks to the greek being sloppy and unfit, a sharper defender would have blocked that cross and he was being tortured by jelavic. after the change we concede one more goal in a totally freakish manner, had more attempts on goal (hit the post), and went on to enjoy or best spell of a poor performance.

it would have been great to bring on a sterling center half, but our three best ones were out injured. good logic maggies, it was all o'neill's fault, not in any way a combination of injuries, poor individual performances, a squad of players inherited mid-season and some crazy bad luck...........

I'm sorry I'm not buying this MAG line of 3rd round better than quarter final bullshit, ffs come on the further you get the better. Reverse cup runs next year and see what the mags say? Yes it hurts more getting knocked out at the quarters because you've invested more emotion in a cup run. It's like saying I'd rather be knocked out thrashed by a non league side in the third round because going down to man u on pens in the final is too much to take.

Basically the mags are saying it hurts too much to dream so we will accept defeat immediately???? Get lost you liars. I saw my team let me down in the quarters but they edid me proud against the boro and arsenal, are you suggesting better to whimper out against Peterborough??? Are you telling me that u wouldn't have preferred to beat Brighton and battle
through to a good quarter final.....? R

By the way if some mags maintain. 3rd round over quarter finals may I suggest you would now prefer being a safe 17th in the league rather than the chance of Europe as the chance of not making Europe hurts too much......get real.:p

Cups are funny for me. Getting to the quarter final is not really much better than the 3rd round in terms of your club. Unless you win it, then there is not much point, there's no second prize. I suppose you could class trips to Wembley for a semi or a final a good day out for the fans. But it turns sour pretty quick if you don't win! If you knew you were going to go out in the quarter final anyway at the start, you choose to just be dumped out in the 3rd round. But you've got to dream as a fan. Bottom line is you don't know so you'd always want to go as far as possible. Once its all over for you, then you can reflect on the flipside of going out.

I probably would have preferred it, but when I look at how gutted you guys are after a quarter-final defeat and getting your hopes up so much, that honestly doesn't seem that appealing to me. Can you blame me for thinking that?

The appeal of getting far in the tournament is sort of cancelled out with the relief that I didn't get my hopes up, so I don't really feel like I'd prefer it either way. I just feel 'meh' about the whole thing. If we got far, good, if we got booted out early, no big deal.

Perhaps its just the fact that it's an annual thing. If it was once in a blue moon then I'd be dying to get as far as possible even if it hurt like **** if we got booted out. With the FA Cup though, the bloody qualifying rounds start again like 4 months after the final. Once you get booted out you're back in the tournament again before you know it.

Are we sure he's not an Everton fan? Its a cracking finish. The first touch is Messi esque in how he sets it up for the right rifle. Not very often I say it when it comes to Sunderland players but, poor ****.

just to get booted out again, so whats the point of taking part if thats the case.

You have had more relative success than us, 2nd/3rd/4th place finishes (Europe basically), FA Cup runners up 2 years running, maybe thats why you think the way you do, all we have had to shout about is 2 7th place finishes, 1 FA Cup runner up, 1 League cup runner up and of course the FA cup win 39 bleeding years ago, with 4 lousy games in Europe.

But the bottom line is, both of our trophy cabinates are bare, and have been for a bloody long time, So League Cup/FA Cup is prority for me, I dont think we are even half way to be able to handle Europe yet anyway, esp not the CL, so that doent intersest me atm in any case, I just want a trophy (which yes will get us into Europe, but i want it more for the trophy than getting into Europe at this moment in time).

Do I get my hopes up, of course I do, I tend to believe I wont, but I do, same as the World Cup I always think England is going to storm it, only be to left thinking, what a pile of ****e again, but 4 years later I am back there and thinking we will storm it again lol

Glutton for punishment maybe, but for me, its what football and most sports is all about, get your hopes up, either it comes up (not very often) or your dreams get shattered, but you pick yourself up again and start it all again the year after.

Advantages of going out 3rd round: No tired legs from extra games
Advantages of going out in quarter final: Keep momentum

I think it's very balanced, obviously I'd like to go as far as possible, right the way to the final, but if a final place isn't achieved then i really don't see the point. I'm fairly on the fence with that one
