Man up and live your life

I am very easy going when things are important to someone, but your advice is only acceptable if his wife could also go out at a moments notice and leave him to do the unpacking. Woman up is what I would say to her! She must know he's a Saints fan, so won't be surprised that he wants to see the match....he should promise to do his share later and make sure that she puts her feet up whilst he's out.

The voice of sense reason as usual Fran ! Wait a minute - are you Mrs AberdeenSaint in disguise !

I frequently tell people that you phrase a request so that there is no discussion. Too many people ask permission and then are surprised when it is refused. I usually make statements. For example, I will be an hour late on Monday as I have a doctor's appointment. I would not say, May I come in an hour late on Monday as I have a doctor's appointment. It has always worked for me.

I can see only one hope for you here. Is there another couple who could invite you both over to have a drink in celebration of the birthday, and once there the men could adjourn to another room with a TV whilst the ladies natter about whatever it is that they do? If such friends are local then you might just get away with it and you would be drinking someone else's booze. A real result, I reckon.:)
