...not too much need to worry, at all.

With nine games to go, our maximum points tally is 99.

With three tough away games, starting tonight at Hull, then next week at Blackpool and finally the last away match of the season at Middlebrough, if we lose those three and win our remaining games, we will still amass a total of 90 points.

The other games we would need to win are the four home games we have left, plus Palace and Peterbrough away.

I think those six are very winnable, and that's if we don't manage to get something from the three away games mentioned above, which we may be able to do.

I think 90 points would be enough to secure automatic promotion, what would you say is the magic number?

If I can remember correctly, last season we were in a worse position, but with an incredible winning streak we held on to automatic promotion. Although in a better position now, the only reason we have more pressure on our shoulders is due to the nature of the prize at the end of this campaign.

Here's hoping West Ham drop points to boro at home..
 
There is certainly no need to panic if we lose tonight - although it would be very good to come away from Hull with something. Tough place to go to, especially on a Tueday night.
 
Every games is a cup final now, we can't afford to drop points. But it won't be the end of the world considering we are top. Ideally we will win the next 2 or 3 and open up some breathing space between us and 2nd

I couldn't care less about that gap - it's the gap between us and 3rd that is important.

The point was the bigger the gap to 2nd, the bigger the gap will probably be to 3rd. But the further ahead of both the better. Best of both. Of course anyone will be more than happy with 2nd.
 
If you look back over the last 3 seasons..
Last season 10/11:
1st - 88
2nd - 84
3rd - 80
6th - 75
--------------------------------------
09/10 season:
1st - 102
2nd - 91
3rd - 79
6th - 70
--------------------------------------
08/09 season:
1st - 90
2nd - 83
3rd - 80
6th - 74

Only 81 points would have outright guaranteed 2nd place in the last three seasons which in our current position would only take 3 more wins. However we are in a highly competitive three horse race and I'd expect somewhere in the region of 87pts would be needed for 2nd place (5 more wins). As you say the 99 points is the maximum we can get which gives us a fair amount of breathing space for dropped points. After the Reading v West Ham game I think we will probably have a better idea of what will be needed. But as you say if we come away with nothing tonight there is no need to panic yet.
 
I'll not pretend I wouldn't be nervous if we lost tonight but rationally thinking, no need to panic. I'll be keeping a very beady eye on Reading these next few weeks with a very difficult few games...

Correct. I bet Nigel Adkins would take 2nd spot now if offered it. I would like us and you to go up. 2 footballing teams with managers who want the game played the right way.

I hope that one play off game is Blackpool v. West Ham. I can see Pool knocking them out and then watch the hammers in meltdown and free fall as the fire sale starts. In Golds own words..""" failure to go up this season means Armageddon for the club.""" oh dear, Lol.
 
This is becoming unbearable!!! Why does it have to be this close :( I'm just going to take one game at a time! With deep breaths with a brown paper bag when I start to hyperventilate!!!

Its not that bad. Your better than both Reading and West Ham. If we could score more goals then Hull City could well nick a top 2 finish. Its an exciting time fo the season when whats gone before means so much. Enjoy the run in and keep the faith. I would swap places with you in a heart beat. Ive seen your remaining fixtures and you should do it with ease even when you lose tonight(i hope..lol). Good luck after tonight folks.
 
At least this thread is different from the 'we must win tonight or the end of the world is nigh'. Winning every game would be option 1, but we don't have to win every game, we just have to match Reading and West Ham to stay above them. The chances of all 3 of us sliding below the following pack is practically miniscule. We beat Leeds and Millwall when it looked like we would drop points, so let's count ourselves as ahead of the game. Better to be us than any other team...it's in our own hands and, more importantly, Nigel's.

I think that 5 points ahead of third (yes they have a game in hand) coupled with West Ham's very up and down current form would mean that from their 10 games they will be getting in the region of 20 points max which is going to be an 87 total.

Reading's form (one less game than West Ham) could see them in the 20 - 23 region if they keep it up so for them 93 total

For Saints that means we would need at max 21 points from 27 to win by goals.

Realistically I think if we can get 18 from 21 it will be top spot and 15 from 21 definitely second!!!

My opinion of course. I think the late runs will come from behind those top 3 and IMO they are all way too far behind now. 2 of the top 3 are going to get at least half the points on offer and that would mean fourth needing to get 26 from a possible 30. Big ask that.
 
I guess it depends how other results go if we lose tonight and whether we start worrying or not but what we must remember is it's only one game

I think that quote is on a thread on the 'knub' forum ;) Sure I read something very similar on there from one of your own.
