I think some of you are showing your football intelligence as ask yourself this question:
"how would the goalscorer be in a position to score if his team mates hadn't assisted him by putting him in the position?"
Now unless were talking about wonder goals, or moments of individual brilliance. I MAY PUT THIS PART IN CAPS SO PEOPLE READ IT as on forums people have a tendency to read only certain parts so please don'tt try and talk down assists by bringing up examples of individual brillance as the debate on assists is about how team mates create goals.
Ask all the great goal scorers, like Linekar for example, or the great partnerships we have seen such as the sas (shearer and sheringham) in fact look back to when jurgen was with us, who was his partner, sheringham and do you think for a second jurgen would have had such a great year without teddy? of course not!
Keane and berbatov, how many times did they assist each other? if they had other partners, would they have had as much success, no.
Now assists aren't always about the final ball, as of course the ball from the back, played to the midfield, who releases the winger and crosses for the striker to score......all players were vital to that goal BUT the killer pass and the finish are the two most difficult parts of that move, which is why the person that assists is so crucial.
Now if you don't understand this, or have been shaking your head then yes you're either immature or rather thick when it comes to grasping football.

I thought I'd come back for a quickie. Ok so Ade sets up Defoe and Defoe misses from 3 yards. The assist for the miss came from Adebayor. So bloody what? If assists for goals are something special to be noted so why aren't assists for misses? The assister has done exactly the same thing only for the forward or whoever to fluff it.
The assister has done his job in creating the chance, now its his team mates job to finish off the good work - you cant lay blame at the assister for his team mate missing a chance, hence the assistor and finisher both need to do their job, which is why they are as important as each other.
The Boss,that is what I said at the start isn't it? The assister has no control what happens when the ball leaves his foot so he's done his job so what's there to note? He assists for goals and he assists for misses whoever he is so I don't see how Ade's "assists" mean anything at all or anybody else's assists. If 4 forwards are atacking 2 defenders and one forward just passes the ball to another forward in a lot of space and he scores a simple goal that makes the assister something to note,I don't think so. I'm sorry Boss but I don't see assists as anything to note. Good saves by the keeper yes and consistent scoring by a forward yes but not assists.
So in summary, stats don't tell you everything. Some assists are rubbish and not due to any particularly good play from the player, same goes for goals and everything else. The best way to tell who's the better player, etc is by watching them play football. Stats can be useful for backing up your point but generally you have to have a point first rather than just looking up a player's stats and building a point around it.
I understand what you mean. Lets use Tottenham as an example.
For instance: Scott Parker plays a stunning 40 yd through ball that Adebayor only needs to finish past the keeper.
Later on in this game, Modric accidentily passes to Adebayor from close range (~1 yard or 2) and Adebayor smashes it into the top corner.
Adebayor is credited with 2 goals.
Modric is credited with 1 assist.
Parker is credited with 1 assist.
In context though, Adebayor was given a simple finish by Parker, he smashed home an incredible goal which Modric had no help in - yet Adebayor gets 2 goals, Modric gets an assist and Parker gets an assist. Judging by this, the 2 assistors have played the same and Adebayor gets given the entire credit for 2 goals even though he was only really 'involved' in 1 (he still scored, but lets just say it was off his shoulder tap in from less than a yard).
Same with passings stats. Modric can be spreading 40 yard balls about and getting 93% pass percentage whereas Parker gets 97% pass success but has been playing simple, straight balls. Statistically looks better, but in reality, is worse (or hard to compare).

Also, the final pass, is just as important as the finish as without the pass, the finish doesn't happen, its not rocket science!
If you want on a football debate, live on tv and said "assists" aren't important, you would be classed as a grade A muppet with no football knowledge - now don't take that as me calling you this, but am just trying to put your views in context.
Playing the simple pass, is what helps the team keep possession, thus allowing the more creative players to have the ball and create chances for their team mates so you really need to get a better grasp of football overall before you start talking about passing and assists.
Players like Parker and remember Claude Makelele? these are the type of footballers who get high percentage rates in passing and tackling, doing the simple job but their team mates understand just how important they are to being in the position to score as how you gonna score without having the ball? with some difficulty.
YV's actually talking about a number of goals wrongly disallowed for offside, in the most part, but had that ball hit Ferdinand instead, would we have got a penalty?
No ****ing chance.
He didn't break any rules as it wasn't intentional and he had no way of reacting in time to get his arm out of the way of the ball. If that wasn't the law then Chelsea's goal against us wouldn't have stood.
I didnt say short passes were irrelevant so sorry if it came across that way. I was more trying to say that a defensive midfielder playing shorter passes could have the same stats as someone trying more risky passes/longer passes but may not have the ability themselves to play these risky/longer passes.
Say, Huddlestone for example. He's great in possession and likes those crossfield balls (havent seen him play for a while, so thats only if I remember correctly) and may acheive an extremely high pass percentage but then if Sandro played the same amount of short, long, whatever passes, he'd get a lower pass completion rate probably - showing that he'd be more effective speeding up play and keeping possession with the shorter passes and giving Huddlestone the chance to spread the play.
Sorry if you misunderstood what I was trying to get across. Writing is hard while working haha.
