Pretty sure giggs was on a multi year deal up untill 2 years ago.
Mr Paolo Maldini was 30 in 1998. Wenger would of offered him a 1 year deal or sold him at that point. I expect that would of pissed maldini right off and he would of left....in 1999!!! I would say he was one of the best defenders on the planet for another 3-4 years and world class for another 3-4 more.
Maldini only quit the year before last!

Petit has spoken of the same issues most of us have. His solution to the obvious problems is different to some (including me), but credit to him though, he has been clear that he thinks Wenger has got it wrong for nearly 3 years now.
Petit has stated very clearly that we should not get rid of Wenger. One of your star witnesses says you are wrong. Do you wish to strike his previous testimony from the record now? How convenient.

I rather Wenger stays but can anyone honestly say that he will alter things to make improvements? His stubborness has led to Arsenal's decline on the pitch. There is no guarantee that he will improve things if we manage to scrape 4th place. He could quite easily keep things the way they are and say that his experiment is still working, that they are still young and developing...
But i hope that Wenger stops his blind stubborness and embrace change. If Fergy can change with the times at the age of 70, then so should he!

I think Petit has got it about right. He's pointed out where we have gone wrong and need to improve. Crucially though, he also recognises that sacking Wenger would be a huge mistake that would be likely to make matters worse rather than improve them.
I think people need to look at the situation from a pragmatic viewpoint. It's too easy to just say ' get rid ' and believe it will solve the problems. I've got more respect for the views that actually look in detail at where we are, what we have, what works and what doesn't, what we need to change and how we go about doing it.

Piskie and Hothead are both right. I think sacking Wenger would be counter productive but Wenger isn't blameless either. He has to accept his shortcomings and make neccessary changes.

Yeah I definitely think he needs to change his approach, I've said so before, but I think he can be too one dimensional in formations and I think (partly to his credit in giving them a chance) that he's stuck with players who aren't really of the required standard.
But this leads me to the main point really. For change to really be effective, we need to have players in our squad who are as good as those in the teams above us. I think our squad needs a major overhaul and we need to buy at least 3-4 top quality players. Wenger has proved time and again that with quality players, he can create title winning teams.
Ultimatley, Wenger can only work with what he's got. It's like sticking a formula 1 driver in Ford Fiesta - he's only ever going to get so much out of it.

I genuinely believe that we have a good core set of players and what we need to do is add the required quality to take us forward. This is one thing we didn't have before. Im hoping that Wenger sees the light and does what he needs to do. Maybe he needs to change his backroom staff? People that would help and actively add positive criticism, something others don't seem to be doing?
