BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson

"The 'platypus' noses of the cars have so far deflected attention from an area that is potentially much more controversial - the exhausts. Governing body the FIA has stipulated a (reasonably large) area on the top of the sidepods from which they must exit from this year, as well as restricting engine mapping, as part of their ban on a technology last year when teams were blowing exhausts along the rear floor to boost downforce. But it's well known that teams are still looking at gains they can get from exhausts by blowing them in certain places, specifically at the rear wing. FIA race director Charlie Whiting is in Jerez taking a look at this year's cars, and he has to decide whether he thinks the position of exhausts is having a deliberate or incidental effect on the aerodynamics. If it's deliberate, he may ask teams to change their designs."

The teams aren't stupid, surely every teams exhaust design will have a deliberate effect on the aerodynamics??? Are all of them going to be banned?
Do the rules say you can't blow onto the rear wing now? I thought as long as they went generally up and backwards (10-30 degrees?) it was fine.

you know if the FIA ruled that Exhausts had to be set in a specific position behind the rear wing we wouldnt have all this arguing

10-30 degrees, that's my understanding of it too. I think Benson's post is just trying to inject a bit of tension and potential drama into the proceedings when really he doesn't have much to say. But that's his job, I suppose ;)

He really is clueless. <steam>

They've got over 300 litres of hot gas piling out of the exhaust every second, how is this not going to effect the aerodynamics? I made this point when he ridiculously interpreted that the throttle had become a moving aerodynamic device, if he doesn't want the exhaust gas to influence things he should ban the internal combustion engine. <steam>

So now he's going to waltz up and down the pitlane banning cars (which are hideous because of his clumsily written rule <steam>) because of something he doesn't understand, after banning a perfectly legitimate innovation preseason. <steam>

Apparently McLArens exhausts are burning the rear floor, so they havent done many laps

oh ffs, how obvious was it that they were going to put the exhaust into the position most beneficial downforce, how stupid are these people that write rules? If they want to ban exhaust assisted downforce they simply have to move the exhaust to the back of the cars bodywork, which is what I thought they had done.

Why not just stipulate that the rear exhausts have to have their exit point betwwen the top edge of the diffuser and lower edge of the rear wing and must point parallel to the ground?

No direct aerodynamic advantage can then be gained as they are neither pointing at the wings or diffusers

I think this would be a good look for any new exhaust rules!

Speaking of burning, Ferrari might be having some problems:

Forza, is that aimed at the tyres, or aero on and around the rear suspension? If the hot air is doing that to the exhaust itself, surely other, more important parts must be taking a beating?
