Hence Mercedes and HRT running last year's cars. They do need to be crash tested before testing now, though, so what have Mercedes and HRT had crash-tested or are they exempt?

Genji, has the crash test changed since last year? I'd assume otherwise last years crash test certificate is still valid. If the front wing is all that has changed, they might have gotten away with it.

​I thought the test had changed significantly since last year's test but all I can find is that it's "tougher" and "more stringent." You're probably right, though - if it's last year's car then the 2012 test might not be appropriate and it has passed a test.

A second red flag of the day, this time for Kamui Kobayashi. The Sauber flyer comes to a halt on the back straight en route to the Dry Sac corner. Once his car is draped in a cloak of secrecy and removed from the track, we'll be able to savour the final 20 minutes or so of day one in sunny Jerez.
Caterham have announced they can't do any more running today - they've broken the starter shaft. The car is fine though, and in an interview with Autosport, Kovalainen already reckons it is quicker than last years. Whether it is enough quicker or not is another question.
