Should never have been given the captaincy back, should have a clear out of all the old boys (Terry,Gerrard,Ferdinand,Lampard) start bringing more of the younger players in. We'll never get anywhere keeping these over paid egostical pricks in the team.

Bringing them through from under 21 into senior team into the euro's get's them playing regularly with each other so they know each other well and sets us up better for the next world cup instead of the usual over hyped, limping along team that we have. Probably find the younger players will play with more pride and hunger.

I agree with all this. Let's face it we're not going to win with the current selection anyway, so why not take the risk, drop them and get some of the young lads in and get them playing together solidly for a couple of years, without the pressure and over hype the current squad get. That set up is working at Newcastle, why not at national level?

Don't agree with this. They have to prove themselves in the time they are fit, you can't pick them on past glories. Look at Owen in 2006, disastrous selection. They have to be fit and playing well. Gerrard has looked decent on his return but he hasn't shown enough yet to be an automatic selection.

Wouldn't pick anyone on past glories but Steven Gerrard is still a fantastic midfielder. Jack Wiltshire is the future of the England team and needs to experience tournament football. I'm all for us clearing out some who have gone past their sell by date but Gerrard clearly has not and therefore should be picked on merit. He is the best midfielder available to us. All of a sudden Liverpool are getting results again. He is a true leader too and should have been our skip for a number of years but has been unable to always be fit enough to fulfill the role. I like Gerrard, when he plays he gives a 110% and is a proper team man.

Milner? You can not give Milner the captaincy. He is not even likely to be a starter when everyone is available. It needs to be someone who is going to play every game and has leadership qualities.

Totally agree with this. Germany only went with some young members of the squad because they had to due to Ballack's injury. Their squad was so good because they have experience at International level and have a formation and manager that suits them. Most of their squad has loads of caps like Schweinsteiger, Klose, Podolski, Lahm, Friedrich and Mertesacker, that's not including Ballack who would've played had he not been injured.

Time is the key, not ripping everything out and starting afresh everytime something goes wrong.

I agree with everyone who says Milner or Parker for captain. Both are total pro's, and always give every game their all. I would give it to Parker, he's already known for his leadership qualities. Shame Fabio wont see this, he'll give the captaincy to Gerrard, despit the world cup performances, when england were more like strangers than a team.

They had a few names left but at least four or five of that World Cup team played in the U21s the Summer before, while the likes of Muller and Kroos hadn't even played at that level by then but are now in the national squad less than two years later. When was the last time so many English players were drafted in at once to a starting lineup? And more importantly, when was the last time we managed to take an U21 team through to the top level? We call up the likes of Walcott too early and a team that could've played together for years is split up.

Of James Milners U21 tenure (which seemed like about 8 years...) theres only Micah Richards who's even close to the senior squad, plus Adam Johnson from his latter games when he was about 23 and still sneaking under the 'you must be under this age to ride' sign.

Obviously ripping up and starting again isn't a good idea, but hanging on to past it players is even worse.

Terry and Lumpoflard wouldn't be in the England squad if they were playing for an unfashionable team. Can you imagine them being picked if they played for us?

It was four that played there. Neuer played because he was an outstanding goalkeeper for Schalke and was going to get a place sooner or later anyway, same story with Ozil, Joe Hart was also part of that squad and is now an England regular and one of the key players. Boateng was played at left back, because he was an utility player and was lucky that Lahm wanted to play right back so Germany had no specialist left back at the time. Khedira got into the starting line up because Ballack got injured in the FA cup final. So that's 4 players, two of which were supremely talented and two of which were pushed in because of things out of the managements control.

Maybe the worry should be that England aren't producing supremely talented youngsters anymore, rather than worry about average to middling young players not getting caps.
