ALAN PARDEW wants Newcastle United fans to show Shola Ameobi “more love” as he looks to give the long-serving striker an extended run in his line-up.

The Magpies boss may not see African Cup of Nations-bound Demba Ba again until mid-February – and sees 30-year-old Shola one of his most reliable players.

Ameobi has scored 71 times for Newcastle since debuting in 2000, but Pardew feels the Nigeria-born striker brings so much more to the black-and-whites.

Pardew told the Chronicle: “Since I have been with this football club, I can name two or three occasions when he hasn’t been at his best. Every time I put him out there he does terrific for me.

“I just wish he was loved a bit more by the fans.

“If they had seen him in the dressing room then I think they would all love him.”

Ameobi’s latest appearance came against Manchester United as he helped inspire the 3-0 win at St James’ Park by supplying the vital flick-on for Ba’s opening goal against the Red Devils.

Pardew said: “His mentality to win the game and his mentality with the other players is there.

“He was terrific against the champions Man United.”

Pardew has already thrown the gauntlet down to Leon Best, Hatem Ben Arfa and Peter Lovenkrands – and now sees the Ameobi factor as crucial in the next few weeks.

And he wasn’t just talking Shola. The former West Ham boss added: “We haven’t seen much of Sammy recently.

“With Demba going away, Sammy might get his chance as well. He has a great family behind him and Sammy couldn’t have anyone better to show him the way than Shola.”

Both Ameobi's are ****e. Shola played well against Man Utd though and Sammy has 'potential' apparently. Would like to see Ferguson on the bench ahead of Sammy, and Shola and Best should be competing for Ba's spot while he is away.

 

Ameobi is one of those players who is one of the most infuriating I have ever seen and has a terrible record but I just can't help but love him. Some great memories though, the Mackems' tormentor-in-chief and scoring at the Nou Camp.

Here's a question, does anyone know what his wages are? Can't imagine them being very high.

Absolutely cannot wait till his testimonial. I'll be going for damn sure.

 

I heard it was £25,000 a week when he signed his contract.

Also, yeah I love him too even though Pards is overrating him a bit lol.

 

I'd imagine he's on at least 30k a week. Possibly a bit more.

Shola Ameobi is ****. I don't care how he is in the dressing room, I don't care how nice he is, I don't care how much he wants to win. He's a lazy and ****e striker, and offers virtually no attacking threat

Better in the air than Best. But apart from that hes the worst striker at the club.

 

I agree tbh. Smith said he sees himself as head cheerleader more than anything this season. So he's clearly fantastic in the dressing room. Why does Shola get gametime for being a nice guy who is good in the dressing room? He can have a good game but i'm sure Smith can too. And Smith works harder. I'd rather have Smith up front than Shola I think actually. They offer the same off the pitch.

Ameobi is just **** man. I mean really, as a STRIKER, what does he do?

Goals? 1 in 5, if that = ****e
Assists? Barely any = ****e
Pace? No
Technique? No
Anything? No

The whole point of a striker is to score goals. That's what he's on the pitch for, and sorry, but he just doesn't do it. If you have TWO good strikers on the pitch, then you have two people and double the chance of scoring goals. If you have one good striker and one absolutely ****e one like Ameobi, then you don't have double the chance of scoring goals. You basically just have 10 men, as Shola's purpose is to be a striker and he doesn't do it anywhere near well enough. The occasional goal every 5 or 6 games is not good enough.

It's not as if he's a particularly good second striker, either. His assists record is as low as his goals record.

 

You're not telling us anything we don't already know. I'm saying I just can't help but love him, irrational though I know that is.

Thing is we ALL agree Shola is a top bloke.....it's on the pitch we worry. The lad simply ambles around the pitch waiting for the ball.

 

If Shola actually made an effort to chase the ball we'd be more inclined to love him.
I remember against Man U he stopped, then started again, and was subsequently beaten to it by the defender when if he'd just kept going he'd have been fine

 

Caused a penalty which wasn't given and almost scored within 2 miniutes of coming on yesterday

 

We've given Shola more love than any Newcastle player

 

Shola is quality. I only really realised it when I went to the Blackburn game how much better we were when he came on. He held the ball up, and was bringing HBA, Cabaye and Gutierrez all into the game, because they could get forward. This in direct contrast to Leon Best's favourite tactics of 'flick-on to no-one' and 'be offside'. My midfield/attack for the next for the next few games would be:

Abeid/Guthrie
Ben Arfa Cabaye Gutierrez
Shola Lovenkrands/Obertan​

The reason for the curveball Obertan up front is he has pace. I reckon him gambling on the last man might be much more useful to us than certainly when he's on the right wing. He can outrun most defenders easily. Further, if he can score a goal or two, it'll up his confidence. When he was at his most confident at Man U, he was crossing the ball early. We need him back at that.
