Paul Merson just said Villa are a bigger club than us....

Demba Ba would leave for Villa for that reason, and Villa are bigger because they've one things more recently than us...

In that case Stoke and Birmingham are bigger than us...
 
I think that was in desperation, he'd spent a good 10 seconds trying to think of why Ba would choose Villa over Newcastle. It was good to see Jeff defend us though.
 
They probably are a bigger club, but Demba Ba wouldn't go there.
 
I love how Merson predicted us to win a few days ago and just predicted us to lose now...

They are not a bigger club. Blackburn have won the PL and we haven't, are they a bigger club? My arse mate.

We are bigger than Villa, we have a fantastic fan base, can pull in 52k crowds and we were CL/Title contenders for ages.

Before the PL years Villa were bigger, but since the PL started we are bigger.

In what sense?

Maybe when MON was their manager, but not now. I'd say we're pretty similar. Could even argue that Newcastle probably have a greater appeal across europe.

Historically for me. Fan base wise Newcastle probably edge it plus Newcastle have a much bigger media profile but overall I would probably just say Villa edge it currently, as Newcastle have had a couple of years in the wilderness while Villa had been qualifying regularly for Europe and had a couple of appearances at Wembley in the last 2-3 years.

Its a close run thing though, as you say, and Newcastle will probably overtake them the way things are going.
 
Jeffs still winding him up about it. Mersons a clown, but thats pretty much what he's paid to be on Soccer Saturday, I just tend to ignore him.
 
You've got to remember that Merson played for Villa, so he's obviously going to be biased.
Why anyone still puts any stock in what he has to say is beyond me.

Newcastle still manage to attract class players from big clubs Internationally, less than a year after being promoted from the CC, but that doesn't make us a bigger club than Villa...?

Newcastle have been bigger than Villa since we got promoted to the PL in 93/94.
