Thousands of OAPs died from heat related illnesses in 1976. If the advice saves one pensioners life, it is worth all of us having to bear being suggested to hydrate at regular intervals when the mercury hits the big 4-0.

Meanwhile.. 13 degrees where I am... What heatwave?
If you’ve got to pensionable age you’v e seen every kind of weather , if you don’t know how to look after yourself by then YOU are responsible for yourself not the state .

In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.6 degrees, this week is expected to exceed 40 degrees.

In 1976 there were 3,000 heat related deaths in the U.K., despite being significantly hotter now, there’ll be less deaths due to better messaging and increased awareness.

Though despite all that messaging, there’s still idiots out walking their dogs.
In 1976 it was sunny and warm for about twelve weeks on the trot, and it did get warmer then usual, it was called a good summer with an infestation of ladybirds. 'This week it's expected to exceed 40 degrees' EXPECTED. So far its been warmer then usual for about three days. It will be thunderstorms by the week end, clear as night follows day.
As for the '3,000 heat related deaths in 1976' I bet there were more cold related deaths last winter, and probably a similar number in years before that.
But I do remember 1976 as a great summer as the sun shone for weeks and every spring since I hear people wish for a summer like 1976. Now we get a forecast of two sunny days and everyone is telling us it's a heatwave.

The definition of a heatwave is three days of abnormally high temperatures.

I remember the summer of 1976 very well. I spent three weeks of it around West Moors military fuel depot, firefighting the wild fires that were threatening the depot. We had fires surrounding St Leonard’s hospital which came very close. After three weeks I was sent on summer leave. When I got back, I was rewarded with a month long outward bound course in Snowdonia. After a week, we were sent up the mountains and I spent another three weeks firefighting.
The only good thing was the fire service catering truck that served the best sausage and chips I ever have had.
When I got back to camp, I didn’t even get a chance to get to my bed before I was sent on a six week deployment the RGA Sir Galahad.
So my summer of 76 was one that I was completely knackered, stunk of smoke and totally pissed off.

One of my older brothers (there's four of us lucky Mum) chose to get married in the summer of 1976 near Southampton in the New Forest. It was officially the hottest place in the country on the hottest day of the year. Given we were dressed up in morning suits it was bloody unbearable, and as I was only 12, bloody dandelion and burdock or coca cola didn't really cut it, unlike my brothers who were knocking it back all day.

And the prize for the most patronising post of the day, goes to.....

Oh ok.. all the hard bastard OAPs on here will be cancelling their doctors and hospital appointments then, as they are responsible for looking after themselves and survived the summer of 1976 when they were in their 20s.

Fortunately, some of us care for the elderly and know that they can need reminding to wear sun screen, drink a glass of water and to take care when swimming in reservoirs and rivers and most importantly, if they overheat and feel confused, to stop angry ranting online and call for medical help.

And they're still fannying around on their phones instead of concentrating on what their dog is doing!

Heimdallr caring for the elderly sounds ****ing scary considering some of the comments he’s made about people older than him.
Harsh, mate. They get so sweet when their hair grows all fluffy, skin like parchment and confused ramblings like a young child. As amongst the most vulnerable in society, we need to look after them, all of them, including Trumpton, Ric and GFAW.
