What I’m liking is the methodical approach to most of these signings so far.Yeah, I'm with you. Goes without saying how disgraceful your last two league campaigns in particular have been and it should never have taken you almost getting relegated for this proactiveness in the market to happen. But what's done is done now, you can only live in the present and so far, the early signs under this new regime are good.
Obviously, more is needed and you need players to gel, get used to the team, environment, what the manager is asking from them etc. But as a building block, it's pretty damn good going.
Robertson is just a superb LB regardless of manager or system and instantly improves us but in Senesi and van Hecke, I saw a stat page a couple weeks back that showed Senesi to have been the most progressive ball playing CB last season with van Hecke in third, we know De Zerbi likes to build from the back and so we’ve signed him the two best possible CBs we could get for his system (van Dijk was second on the list so no chance there for us), the fact he knows van Hecke is even better.
Tonali (should it happen, feels doubtful but I’ll try to be optimistic) represents a player who can dictate from deep and help his side control possession which De Zerbi wants. Personally I’d have preferred a more attacking CM/ ball carrier to compliment Bentancur but a Tonali x Bentancur pivot can absolutely work in RDZ’s system.
The only player I’m completely against is Savinho. He represents this wave of player who looks amazing on YouTube comps but over a 90 minute game does little to impact it. I’ve said before he’s Mahrez without a brain and stand by it.
