Did they say he was 100% crocked and were being mendacious in selling him to southampton?
I don't know the exact details of his injury or fitness but I very much doubt they thought he was 100% crocked as they were still offering him a contract, what I do know was,
He was offered a new contract, his agent was a complete knob asking for way more. We came back with an improved offer which he was prepared to sign, however he got injured.
Sunderland then took that offer off the table till they knew the extent of his recovery .
How he recovered from his injury and what his fitness was I have no idea, but we had all his data of everything he can and can't do, there was maybe something in that , that caused concern or maybe we were just being cautious.
Then the original offer was again on the table , but this time we wanted clauses put in to cover ourselves.
It was up to Southampton to do a medical which they did and I personally don't think there were any underlying issues we held from them.
In the end we got a 10 million transfer fee and RS got a very good contract. Like I've said before both parties benefited which was the best outcome in the situation

Really like the look of Troilo and the Brazilian CB that weve been loosely linked with Viery

I think Bologna are going to regret not cashing in on Lucumi last summer
It’s hindsight really though, isn’t it?

Reminds me of when Everton were pushing for Lamine Kone from us after a decent first season. Reportedly offering near £20m and we stood firm and said no.

Kone then went to **** and was with us in back to back relegations before buggering off for next to nowt.

I hope we sign Gerty but the obvious Elephant in the room is he does not get in our strongest back 4. Does he want to sign here to be a bit part player again or go somewhere else and probably be their first choice right back

Odd that we include him in our retained list on the day the clause apparently expires. Doesn't add up.

Also they said they are in discussions with Geertruida not the selling club?

Maybe they activated the clause and now need to get agreement with the player?

Personally i think hes worth more than the pre loan agreement transfer price !So i cannot imagine a scenario where we would let that trigger date go by unless we were not interested in his signing.I think your your reasoning is solid and I agree with you!

There’ll be a mix up this year. Loads of matches to play in.

Think the argument regarding our strongest back 4 is an interesting one, with plenty of people probably saying that he does get in, including myself. However, I can see other people's opinions as well.

Out of curiosity who would you drop for him, Hume im guessing?

I just think Hume offers so much more attacking wise as we saw with his fantastic goal against Chelsea. It is a really difficult call though because it would also be hard to drop Reinildo who is a natural LB on the other side to accommodate Hume. It was a privileged position to be in and I hope we can be in it again next season with Gerty signed permanently.

My slight concern is the 20m fee which is pretty high.

Hume doesn't get in the strongest back 4 for me...

Mukiele - BDB - Alderete - Reinildo

Yeah i agree that is the strongest which for me would make Gert 3rd choice RB. Hes versatility is a huge bonus though which is why he'd be a great signing, plus he's loved in the dressing room apparently, but realistically we need to think about how many games he was able to play last season, and would it really be worth paying 20m for him.

Its a conundrum i wouldnt want to make a decision on because its a tough one. Whos to say he'd want to sign anyway due to his limited opportunities last season.

Yeah I get the 20m fee as well but I think realistically for us now, as an established? Premier League team, 20m isn't a lot for a proven PL and international player who's a quality back up in probably 3 position's. RB, CB and CM and then it's down to him to try and make his key position, RB I think, his own.

I really wouldn't be against our starting back 4 being Gerty, Mucky, Omar and Reinildo. I think that back 4 is equal to the one I mentioned above in all honesty and would be great to be able to keep that as an option. Then with injuries you can also go

Hume, any 2 of Gerty/Mucky/Omar, Reinildo

I think that's great options for the defence and signing Gerty means we only need to sign a LB and then I'd leave the defence alone and concentrate on the attacking side of the team :)

I mean, how great is it to be having these conversations man! I ****ing love it! Haha

Yeah good points mate.

Haha I know, I still have to give my head a shake sometimes and remember how far we've come in such a short space of time. I never thought id be talking about players of this calibre going into a season playing in europe in my lifetime.

Sunderland have joined the race to sign highly-rated Bosnian forward Kerim Alajbegovic, TEAMtalk understands, as they look to build a squad capable of competing for the Europa League title.

We understand Sunderland have made fresh contact with the representatives of 18-year-old attacker Alajbegovic, signalling their serious intent to secure his signature.

Alajbegovic, who impressed with 13 goals and four assists across all competitions in a standout season with Red Bull Salzburg, is due to return to Bayer Leverkusen on July 1 following the activation of their €8million (£6.9m / $9.2m) buy-back clause.

The versatile attacker, capable of operating on either wing or as a second striker, now has a valuation of €25-30million (up to £25.9m / $34.6m). This could increase further, should he impress at the World Cup for Bosnia.

Despite signing a long-term deal with the Bundesliga club, his future remains far from settled

It's unbelievable isn't it mate! Absolutely nuts to think where we were only a few short years ago!

If we signed geertruida I'd still probably want another centre half in anyway so that doesn't really help there, he just adds a third right sided centre half option that we probably don't need with only Alderete and Onien comfortable on the left of the 2.

Which makes him only really another option at right back, can see why the club would maybe have doubts about paying 20m for a position you'd argue has our strongest depth already when there's no senior right winger and now only reinildo who started 23/38 games at left back.

No idea what the full budget is for this summer but there's obviously more pressing matters, would be brilliant if 4/5m saved on geertruida by renegotiating could be the difference in getting our top target at the other end.

This link seems really exciting, his data looks great and he's played a lot for an 18 year old. Left footed too so could give us an option to play on the right and cut in.

Ticks all the boxes, hope this is more than just agent noise.
