We were both PC’s together at Wellingborough for a few months. He transferred in from another force as a just off probation PC. It was fairly obvious to anyone that he intended to get as high as he could. I think he was a Chief Inspector before I had time to blink.
Aye seen it many times. Like frogs in a bucket climbing over each other to get to the top. Probably never went on the streets to learn anything but did some fancy project which earned him promotion.

Very possibly. It would have been around 10 years ago now. The Krankies were in Singapore and I turned on the hotel room telly and there he was as part of a big BBC Singapore report on facial recognition technology being rolled out by the Met. I think he might have been a Commander down there for a bit. Anyway he was the one introduced as the lead on the technology and its implications and importance for policing.
They say that you always get promoted one rank above your level of competence though!

Is this a private old coppers conversation or can any explod butt in.......
Ive seen this guys Ilk many times in the job but the worst was a female on the fast track scheme who was promoted Inspector as soon as she was out of her probation.
One night shift we were called to a fatal RTA and she interfered to such a degree we couldn't proceed against the drink driver who was at fault in killing a pedestrian....she ended up as Deputy Chief Constable in Cumbria....unbelievable but absolutely true.
I've been retired over 30 years and I tell you today's leaders in the police forces throughout the UK can't hold a candle to those we served under.

Open to anyone CM!!
I agree. I’m pleased I’m coming up to retirement age and I’m actually looking forward to it. I’m 60 in August and I like to think I still have a young outlook on what I do. But the job is the job wherever we go. And my generation have had our time. In some ways I feel sorry for those joining now on both sides of the world. None of them will have the discretion to do the job properly and with a sense of natural justice that you and @Whittylad definitely had and I did although not as much.

Agree 100% with your comment re today's leaders. Very poor compared to the gaffers I worked under. Ive been retired 18 yrs now. Most of them were looked up to and respected.

Is that not the same with about 95% of the people at the top of private or public sector services, none respected, all money grabbing leeches.
No wonder the country is in the mess it’s in.

Been in this house 9 yrs and we hear owls most nights but hadn't seen any bats, which was a big miss as we saw bats most evenings - along with the occasional badger mooching along our street going in and out of gardens.

Then last summer Network Rail removed the trees along our back fence line and this spring we've started seeing bats. No badgers yet though!
