Good Morning. It's Friday 5th June, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Statement of intent as Ampadu commits to 2030

Ethan Ampadu has committed his long-term future to Leeds after putting pen to paper on a new four-year contract extension that will keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2030. The announcement, made yesterday, brings an end to speculation surrounding the Welsh international's future and signals the club's clear intent to build their Premier League project around their talisman. While the specific financial terms remain confidential, the deal represents a substantial upgrade to his previous salary, reportedly increasing his weekly wages from £40,000 to £90,000 a week, placing him among Leeds United's highest earners.

Since arriving from Chelsea in 2023, Ampadu has emerged as an indispensable figure in Daniel Farke's setup, transforming into the defensive anchor and on-field general that Leeds have craved for years. Across 126 appearances in all competitions, the 25-year-old has compiled a record that speaks for itself, anchoring a defence that proved crucial in securing the club's top-flight status this season. His exceptional campaign culminated in him sweeping the club's major individual awards, claiming both the Player of the Year accolade and the Players' Player of the Year honours recognising his influence both on the pitch and within the dressing room.

Leeds United Chairman Paraag Marathe expressed the club's delight at securing their skipper's services, describing Ampadu as the fundamental cornerstone around which the club intends to build during the forthcoming summer transfer window. In a message delivered directly to the club's passionate support base, Marathe emphasised that the extension represents far more than a contractual formality, it is a statement of intent from a club determined to establish themselves as consistent Premier League contenders.

For his part, Ampadu admitted that having his future "sorted" comes as a immense relief, allowing him to fully focus on maintaining the club's upward momentum without the distraction of transfer speculation that had intensified as he approached the final year of his previous agreement, which had been set to run until 2027 with an optional further twelve months. The new deal not only protects Leeds' asset but also provides Farke with the foundation upon which to construct his squad for the seasons ahead, knowing his leader and inspiration will be present for the journey.

Could Darlow, Cairns and Perri all be staying?

Leeds United have given the most telling sign yet that Karl Darlow, Alex Cairns and Lucas Perri may all be part of the club’s plans next season, by putting the trio front and centre in the launch of the 2026‑27 away kit and the new goalkeeper strips. The Whites unveiled their latest yellow away jersey, the second such colour to appear in the past three campaigns, during a televised event at Elland Road. The design pays homage to the Championship title‑winning 24/25 kit, reusing the iconic “Smiley” badge that adidas bought back for that memorable season and incorporating a subtle nod to the club’s heritage with a clean, modern silhouette.

The timing of the reveal is significant. Both Darlow and Cairns are out of contract at the end of this month. By modelling the new keepers kits, does it indicate that they are expected to remain in West Yorkshire beyond the summer? Sources close to the club suggest that Cairns is being groomed for a possible transition into a coaching role, while Darlow is in talks over a contract extension that would keep him at Leeds for at least another year.

Leeds rubbish Summerville clause rumour

Recent speculation on social media suggesting Leeds United will pocket £4m-£5m if Crysencio Summerville earns his first senior cap for Holland are wide of the mark, according to Leeds-Live this morning. Club sources have unequivocally refuted the claim, stating that no such contract clause ever existed in the forward’s 2024 transfer to West Ham United. The original transaction was structured as a base fee of £26 million, supplemented only by standard performance‑related add‑ons, with no bonus linked to international appearances.

When Summerville moved from Leeds to West Ham in 2024, the deal was framed around a guaranteed £26 million payment, plus potential add‑ons tied to club achievements such as league position or European qualification. Leeds officials have emphasised that the paperwork contains no provision for an international‑debut payment, thereby dispelling the circulating rumour of a multi‑million‑pound incentive. The misunderstanding appears to have arisen from misinterpretations of standard add‑on clauses that are common in high‑profile transfers, rather than from any genuine contractual term.

Summerville, 24, is expected to leave the London Stadium this summer after West Ham were relegated to the Championship, with Roma hot favourites for his signature. Alas, Leeds don't have a sell on clause either. Leeds do however have a sell on clause with French side Toulouse FC with Charlie Cresswell. The Whites will pocket 15% of any profit made on that deal, when the former England U21 defender moves club.

Great news re Ampadu, shows ambition. Previously we’d have sold him to the lowest first bidder. To be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if we resigned both Darlow and Cairns when the retained list comes out in case we can’t get a no.1 or can’t offload Perri. If we find a buyer and the right no.1 then we’ll do it but I think we’re just managing the risk. Last thing we want to do is sell Perri & lose Darlow/Cairns on a free & have no keepers.

Perri isn’t as bad as a lot of people make out. In any case, better to keep him than sell at a loss.

His save % was really poor but he looked better when brought back into the cup team and a couple of grest saves. He's relatively inexperienced, it was new club, new country, high pressure league and league position. Top class sport is about confidence and in keepers it's critical. I'm willing to cut him some slack. Just not the 4 years worth people were willing to cut Meslier <laugh>

Regardless of how good we've been in the transfer market, Ampadu would have been irreplaceable had he left. We wont do a more important piece of business this summer than that new contract
Agreed. Our best and most consistent player for 3 years in my opinion. Irrespective of his role as captain at which he's great on and off the pitch.

All very quiet out there at the moment.

Update on the lads cricket season after his disaster a couple of weeks ago. (Out for 0, 1 over with 3 wides and a dropped catch in the field).

Did not open bat this time. Dropped down the order to batsman number 8. Went in to partner a lad who scores plenty with 6 overs left (20 over innings) and his job was to stay in to try and get the team to finish the innings. He faced around 20 balls and scored 5 runs, only succumbing in the penultimate ball of the innings which did indeed conclude the innings so a pretty decent job done. A very solid and disciplined defensive display, like a young Geoffrey Boycott out there. All out for 72.

He didnt open bowl but after 4 overs came in to the attack with the opposition 13-1. 3 dot balls followed by him dismissing the opening batsman for 12. His 2nd over saw him dismiss batsman #3. Bowling figures of 4 for 2 wickets. No extras off him this week.

Solid out in the field as he had to work hard on the off side doing well to stop a couple of boundaries. Nothing went past him and his backing up was much better. Won the game as opposition were all out for 47.

Came off the pitch with a big smile this week instead of a tear in his eye.

Cup quarter final tomorrow night against the same side from today but this time away from home. The downside is that they have a lovely bar down there but it's closed tomorrow because there is a function on. Bugger!

Great to hear the update emu as my daughters basketball season is now over.
Is 20/20 the format most youngsters now play ?

Yes, he moved to 20 over cricket this year. They dont tend to give many LBW. Its very 'coached' during the games.

Last year he play MHP (mixed hardball pairs) where a team starts on 150 runs but you lose 5 runs per wicket (and obviously accumulate runs as you go). A batsman can be out multiple times during his tenure at the crease. That way nobody faces just one ball gets out and is finished. This year it's full rules.
